The Brutal Planet Goes To Hell
By Joe D. / KISS Hell Online

As the Alice Cooper Brutal Planet roadshow rolls through the U.S. laying waste to small & big towns alike, Alice returned to OKC for the first time since 1982 & I did this interview with his band before their show that night.

-A.C.2000 Line up-

  • Eric Singer - Drums
  • Ryan Roxie - Guitar
  • Greg Smith - Bass
  • Pete Freezin - Guitar
  • Teddy 'Zig Zag' Andreadis - Keyboards

KISS HELL: How's the U.S. tour been going so far?

TEDDY ANDREADIS: It's going good. We're playing gigs.

PETE FREEZIN: The L.A. show was a highlight both musically and vibe wise.

ERIC SINGER: Yeah, I was great, how were you?

RYAN ROXIE: I thought it was good.

    GREG SMITH: Wow.

KH: How was the European tour before that?

ES: Europe was actually very good. We did 16 or 18 shows in Germany and it was really good because a lot of times we would play smaller towns & ask 'how's the crowd gonna be?' but every night it would always be a good crowd. It was pleasantly surprising & the band plays real well together. I think this is a good band & all the people that have seen this band said they think this band sounds good together. The sum is better than the parts which is most important. It doesn't matter if you've got one or two guys where you think, I like that guitar player, that keyboard player's great. If the band doesn't have a cohesive sound then it really doesn't matter.

KH: What's different about the line-up since the last tour?

ES: The band's a lot better. We got a better keyboard player.

    TA: See that.

KH: After playing with Alice since '91, how was it to finally play on an Alice album?

ES: I've worked with Alice alot & always thought it was ironic that I never ended up on a live thing & the timing just never worked out. I never even ended up on the live videos or anything but this year I did the record & there's a new live DVD, Live From the Brutal Planet, a live concert from London.

KH: What will the DVD include?

PF: It's the same show you'll see tonight almost exactly.

KH: Do you change songs around much when you're touring?

PF: In just the first month or so. Since then it's been pretty much the same.

KH: How long will you be touring for Brutal Planet?

RR: What time is it? (laughs)

ES: This tour goes 'till October 31st, Halloween in New York. Then we have a one off show on the 11th in Phoenix for some classic rock festival with Sammy Hagar & Kansas and some other bands to be announced. They're talking about doing a European run again in February with Motley Crue.

TA: & then Australia after that.

PF: It's called 'Monsters Of The Millenium.'

ES: It's some kind of joint thing. I don't know if there's any other bands on it but from what we're told it's confirmed Motley Crue & Alice.

KH: How long did you spend recording the drums on the record?

ES: I was there for three days. I came in and did the drums and that was it.

KH: Were there any extra songs recorded for the album?

ES: There's one extra song that's on the Australian & Japanese version.

TA: 'Can't Sleep, The Clowns Will Eat Me.'

KH: Who's been opening the shows for you guys?

ES: Right now we have Tidewater Grain. We had the Donna's, we had the Knack in L.A. for one show. A band called Cinematic did a few shows. Dope is gonna open up for the last 2 weeks on the East Coast.

KH: What are your opinions on the new KISS (farewell) show?

TA: That was cool. I had never seen KISS before and it was fun to see KISS.

ES: We went to Anaheim so we got to see the show with the antics where Gene got stuck and Paul got stuck. I'm sure they weren't happy but we found it, and the audience found it quite amusing.

KH: There were some rumours going around that Peter was gonna quit (& Eric would play). Do you wanna comment on that?

    ES: Teddy started that.

    TA: Yeah right!

    ES: He started that rumour!

TA: I did not start it.

ES: He went on the internet & did it for fun and it started steamrolling into this big f**kin' schizm. Teddy started the whole thing.

    TA: I don't even own a computer!

ES: Yes you do you liar (laughs). Somebody obviously started some rumour to stir up the shit & of course these guys busted my balls about it but as we can see, that hasn't happened.

TA: Well when was Peter's (so-called) last day?

KH: I think in Providence a few weeks back.

ES: I just find it quite amusing when people say that. What do they think I'm sitting at home? They forget like duh I'm on tour & then they realise. That's the third time this year that rumour was on the internet that I know of.

KH: Do you think you'll make another ESP CD?

ES: there ya go Ryan. how about ESP II?

RR: ESP II (band cracks up).

TA: That's the one you did '20th Flight Rock' on right?

    KH: The Montrose song.

ES: It's an Eddie Cochran song actually. But, no that was just for fun. I don't think so but if I do another one I would do it with different people. Just because the whole idea is just to do it for fun & it's not a band.

    KH: That's a good CD.

ES: Well if you like those kind of songs. Those are a lot of the bands that I grew up on.

KH: How did you choose the set list for this tour?

TA: We rehearsed it in Phoenix & then we rehearsed before we went into the staging of the show. We rehearsed & just learned the songs. We learned about 40 tunes & then picked from that what worked & didn't work & then with Alice we started putting songs together. I think Alice kind of had a set list made up & we went through it a couple times to see what segueways didn't work and the first couple months we were on tour we would take out & put stuff in constantly. He was mentioning about pulling out 'Blow Me A Kiss' & putting 'Sanctuary' in.

KH: How much new stuff are you doing live?

    PF: About six songs.

TA: The first part of the show is the new record & then we throw something from the new record into the 2nd half of the show.

KH: Any other future plans you could tell us about?

PF: I'm retiring after this tour. This will be my last tour. I've basically decided I've had enough of the crazy rock&roll lifestyle. I'm gonna become Eric's personal assistant.

TA: Nah, we'll just go back to whatever we were doing & wait for the next big thing to come around.

GS: We've got like original projects that me, Eric & Ryan have that we're working on.

    KH: What's up with Glamnation?

RR: Glamnation retired. We retired after we crossed the Atlantic and that was the whole goal of Glamnation & we played a big transvestite club in West Hollywood so how can you get bigger than that? You know what though, when you retire a band it always leaves you open for a reunion tour. * Special thanks to the A.C. Band-Joe D.
