Issue #5:
1994 Chile Pro Shot

Back again for another lovely issue of Video Spotlight. This month we uncover the mystery of Santiago, Chile, 1994. I received many requests to review this one or a video featuring the Revenge line up. So, like Burger King I give it to you your way. I only wish I had a video from Turkey of Kiss due to the fact that I was Hungary and prefer Turkey over Chile. HA- HA

5 Facts about the Chile Video:
1. One of the few shows done on the promo tour for Kiss My Ass
2. The set list features more classic KISS songs than any other non-makeup video so you can smell a reunion was near
3. One of the only shows to feature Eric Singer singing Black Diamond
4. The South American shows changed stages from the Kiss logo to the Hot in the Shade stage

A Little About the Show
For those who don't have this show I figured I'd fill you in on other things besides the songs and how good or bad I felt the performance was. Here is a visual of what they wore on stage that night in Santiago

Stage Atire
Paul- Full front Paul Stanley make up shirt, leather pants.
Gene- F**K Censorship shirt, studded vest and leather pants.
Eric- Black long sleeve shirt with flames on the sleeves later in the show he wears a short sleeve shirt. You can't see his shorts 'til the end when he comes out from behind the kit for the encore.
Bruce- Leather jacket with Saturn shirt (a tribute to Ace?), leather pants.

The Show
Kiss played a handful of dates in South America to promote Kiss My Ass. Most were aired on South American TV lucky for us. All are pro shots and are available titles such as Rio & Argentina. For this show the Kiss logo was used instead of the Hot in the Shade stage. I personally don't like the logo they used. It looks cheesy with the bolts holding the S's together. The S's should be one piece not two and if it's gonna be two my advice is to hide it better. My 3 year old nephew could build a better logo with Lincoln logs (anyone remember those?). The show kicks off with the HITS theme music, which to me sound like something out of Phantom of the Opera.

The Songs
Creatures of the Night - Paul sings this like his life depended on it. Lasers in the background add a nice effect for this great opener. Paul uses a capo device, which is a key altering tool for guitar. This is placed on the G chord in this song so Paul can wave his arms and be Paul without having to worry about holding the note down. Towards the end of the song he switches to a guitar minus the capo for the next song but unfortunately this song's ending is sloppy.

Deuce - This is the best place for this song in my humble opinion. It gives the crowd a chance to get settled in and strap on their seatbelts for KISS. This features the classic choreography, Bruce using some of as he calls it "Aceisms" in his solo with Eric & Gene sharing the scream at the end of the song.

Parasite - Before the song Paul tells the crowd "Let's get crazy" and also speaks a few words in Spanish, but due to time constraints I wasn't able to get the translations for you and I apologize. Eric hot-rods this old classic up with his heavy hitting style, while Paul & Gene share the lead vocal duties much like the old days.

Unholy -Paul before this one tells the crowd they were waiting 10 years to come to Chile. After the intro Gene takes center stage. He has his bass in hand to do what I call the "Crucifix Pose."Those who've seen it know what I mean, for those who don't I'll try to explain. He puts his foot on the monitor puts his forearm behind the neck of the bass and holds the bass itself in front of his face to create a crucifix effect. How's that? Are you following me or did I lose ya?? On a sad note his voice is horrible here. It cracks maybe due to the fact of Unholy being a "demanding tune to sing live." He also goes off key twice and, in typical Gene fashion, messes up the words and sings totally different lyrics in the second verse. However, Gene sticks his tongue out during the solo, and thanks to a close-up of Paul we notice some white dots on his chin. Possibly some serious acne problems for Mr. Stanley? My advice, Oxy size it Paul! Lasers fly thru the air and Gene's last note in the song has dogs yelping in the street begging for mercy.

I Stole Your Love - Paul announces to the crowd how they asked people what songs they wanted to hear and proceeds to intro the song as one from Rock & Roll Over. Well, besides Paul's memory lapse of what album this appears on (which reminds me, I have the Revenge show from Philly and he said Christine 16 was from this album too) this version is great and also has a new solo by Bruce in it very similar to the solo he used when they played this on the HITS tour. I do wish Paul would've done his solo and then had Bruce rip or do the classic Ace solo.

Cold Gin -Another funny rap from Acne Chin (sound like a new superhero?). Cue theme music here! He flies thru the air, he points, he shoots GOOOO!!! SPLAT!! Acne everywhere no one is safe from Acne Man-- sorry I'm amusing myself here. He goes on to say this song is from the 1st album and this album is about alcohol. Uh, no, wrong. Again, last time I checked only 1 song was about alcohol but I'll let him slide being the nice guy I am. A sea of head's bob up and down while Gene serenades them about his heater being broken, his landlord being gone, and needing another quart of Cold Gin. Watching You - This is the best musical line up of Kiss in my opinion they ever had. I know that comment may piss some people off but I truly believe that. Gene's voice cracks again while attempting to sing this number. He again doesn't hit the high notes. But one question in my mind, why doesn't Paul do it like on the Detroit Revenge video? This song segues into the next tune, which isää.

Firehouse - This moldy oldie is updated thanks to Eric Singer and doesn't drag half as bad as it usually does. Gene, due to wind problems switches positions to do the now legendary fire-breathing act at the end of the song.

Calling Dr. Love - God where's my Valium!!! This set's staring to put me to sleep Firehouse and Dr Love back to back just doesn't work for me. Only thing saving this is Bruce's tasty fretwork.

Makin Love - WOW!!!! A wake up call here just in the nick of time. It was so great to hear this one come back from the dead. Paul pulls a Gene and messes the lyrics up, something to the effect of "I really want her by my side heaven knows," but it sounds cool anyway. Now, for the ending Eric makes up for the lack of tom toms on his set by using his feet and crashing cymbals for the end fill. In case you didn't read the Union Thought Vault review, my pal Ron said "I'd probably have Eric Singer's robot baby" due to the fact I love his double bass drumming style. In case you're wondering, if I was a female (which I'm not) I would do it. I'd be like the robot from Richie Rich -- just call me Byrona instead or Irona.

War Machine - You better watch out cause this song is a steamroller in disguise. Great laser effects and yes, Gene's voice gets better here. It's about time.

I Was Made For Lovin' You - Paul requests for the audience to sing this one comes to light here. This song is always very big overseas. I love the Revenge era version of this song due to the fact Paul sings it with more balls that the Dynasty incarnation. The camera fades back to show the 2,000 plus Red Hot Chile Peppers popping bobbing and stomping carcasses. Say that 10 times fast I dare ya!!!!

I Want You - The crowd sings the intro much to Paul's delight. If you watch very closely during the first verse there is a close-up of Paul and in the background it appears Gene loses his balance and falls to one knee. Was it live or Memorex? This is also another song where, while Bruce's solo rips, I'd prefer the original duel solo like I mentioned about I Stole Your Love. There is a very cool "I Want You" section like always between Paul & the crowd at the end.

Domino - I love this song and it really annoys me Gene screws up the lyrics again, and always seems to do that to this song (Yes, lyrics are my only anal thing about KISS). I have one word of advice for Gene for upcoming tours, TELEPROMPTER!!! USE ONE!! YOU NEED THE LYRICS IN FRONT OF YOU! YOU FORGETFUL SACK OF COOKIE CRUMBS!!! (Man I'm sorry I gotta lay off coffee when I write this -- "I'm out of control.") On a good note, the spoken rap is hysterical. Gene says, "Everytime I see your chicquitas with the big tetas I want to put them in my mouth." If you know the meaning to this you'll laugh you head off, but I can't translate it because I'm going for a PG 13 rating. The singing and playing as well as lyrics are very sloppy making this song disturbing to watch. I'd ponder that this wasn't rehearsed properly.

Love Gun - A funny thing I noticed here is when the crowd lights go on I see houses. Was this show done in a residential area? Boy the neighbors must've been thrilled. Man I guess that shows how bad things were getting. KISS reduced to playing on a street as opposed to an arena. This version is a standard one but is one of the tighter sounding songs in this performance. Lick It Up - Paul does a cool crowd sing-a-long here. He sings the chorus with the crowd a few times then says, "My turn," and goes into the "Don't wanna wait 'til ya know me better" acapella intro. This version is very cool and the lasers are a nice touch.

God of Thunder - Another nice treat in this set. Gene makes more "demon" faces and plays to the camera more in this song. The performance is hard hitting and very convincing.

I Love it Loud - Eric Singer does the crowd chant in the beginning which is pretty cool. One thing most people don't realize is how great of a voice Eric has, which I'll get to a few songs down the road. The song is really great and one thing I've noticed over the years while having a guitar player from Brazil in my KISS cover band is the Creatures CD is massive overseas. It's kinda of how Dynasty or Unmasked is in Australia so you can better understand. Another botch up on Gene's part here as he messes up the last verse. So many girls so little time to remember lyrics, Tisk Tisk.

Detroit Rock City - Great performance here!!!! This also has some nice close- ups of Eric from the side so you can see how hard he plays the drums. A nice tip of the hat here from Gene -- he puts the Chilean flag on his bass & this song is the closer of the main set.

Black Diamond - Kiss returns to the stage with the crowd singing Rock & Roll All Night. Paul has different plans for them. He informs the crowd that Eric Singer wants to sing a song for them. This is Eric's vocal debut in Chile and goes off without a hitch. His performance is stellar. I prefer his version to every other version done in the past by KISS drummers. His voice is a nice combo of Eric Carr's & Peter's voice (Can you tell I like it?). This song ends with the 83 Rio ending. The ending is a tad bit sloppy, with Paul singing to the crowd if they'd like to hear another song.

Heaven's on Fire - This is a weird place for this Animalize concert staple, but I like it anyway. This version does it justice and is played very well.

Rock & Roll All Night - This song is the usual closer of the set here, unlike on the Revenge tour where it was placed in the middle of the set. Paul, proving he's always looking for something new to add to his arsenal, pulls an old Hendrix trick out of his bag and proceeds to light his guitar on fire then smash it. We finally get some pyro at the end of this song. But like many songs here, this ends sloppy and off time thus ending this painful show in KISSTORY!!!!

Rating of Chile '92
I'd have to give this show a 5, on the grounds that they probably didn't rehearse much for it. The rating would've been lower but the quality of the video and set list boosted it up a bit in my eyes here. It's still an important piece to have for any video collector, but don't let this review be your only guide. Track it down and judge for yourself if you don't have it already. These are purely my views and yours may be different so let your eyes and ears be your guide. Until Next Month, keep 1 finger in your nose and your other hand in your pants!
