Issue #8:
1993 Foundations Forum

Hi everybody it is August and it's time for Video Spotlight once again. In keeping with the short show fashion this month we're going to look at another strange piece in the bootleg catalog, the 1993 Foundation Forum show. Now I realize some of you may not have some of these tapes I review each month, but the main goal of this article is for people who have them to read it to maybe see something they didn't notice before or maybe to point something out that I missed. The other reason is to encourage you to be bad little boys and girls and go out and find these tapes trade buy them whatever. They are a "must have" in your Kiss collection even though they may not be loved by Gene or Paul but even they understand the fans want this stuff. Now, for all you wondering yes, one of the main purposes of this article listed above has happened two times in particular. EX..I was quoted that Ace didn't use a triple pickup Les Paul 'til Love Gun. (Buzzer goes off and in Alex Trebek voice) " Oh so sooorry." Another case is I never knew the 1994 Chile show took place at a train station until Chris from Asylum pointed it out to me. So me being the humble guy I am can admit I was wrong. Ok enough blabbering and let's get to the review.

Facts about Foundation Forum

1. Only show in non-makeup era where only makeup material was performed. In this case the criteria is only songs from the 1st 6 studio albums

. 2. Let Me Know, All The Way & Mr. Speed were at one time rumored to have been rehearsed for this show.

3. Some songs played in the set list haven't been played for 15 or 20 years or ever. (Maybe a testing gauge for G&P for what songs to play on the Reunion Tour?)

The Show

September 11, 1993 Burbank Hilton California Kiss played the Foundations Forum a place usually where it's basically 3 days of Q&A's, music from new bands via live show cases all in all a music convention. So why did KISS play? Simple they wanted too!!

Now some interesting notes about this before I break down the show for you.

This tape opens up with a piece from Headbangers Ball with Rikki Ratchman or however you spell his name and honestly does anyone really care? Ya know this guy has kissed more rock stars asses than George Washington has slept in houses. That's it I'm fired up lets start a campaign BRING BACK ADAM CURRY & THE HEADBANGER'S BALL. C'mon folks admit it, Adam rules. Look, he had the jacket, the afro, he was perfect. Ok sorry back to my notes from the pre-show interview done by smooch boy. He asks why Kiss was playing the convention (answered above) and also how they felt about bootlegs. Paul was quoted to say there's nothing wrong with the fans wanting the stuff (looking at Rikki) You'll know how that feels when the bootleg the show tonight. How right you were Starchild!!

KING OF THE NIGHTTIME WORLD - No you wanted the best, yeah you got the best ahhh ahhh ahhh ahhh ahh ahhhhhhh (from the upcoming CD Psycho Circus) Whoops hope I didn't ruin the surprise for anyone. (Evil smirk arises on my face as I typed that) This song hasn't been an opener since the Dynasty Tour '79. One question, WHY?? It's a classic opener full of power and well, it's Paul. It starts off with a simple "Let's go!" Bruce opens the sustain chord of the intro and the bands kicks into it full steam. Boys & Girls this sounded so good to hear live again, as did many songs on this tape.

TAKE ME - Another classic sex tune from our hero done great justice. The only other version I've seen/heard that was better was the Japan 77 version but that review is yet to be written but soon I promise (heard that before) HA HA HA!!

GOIN BLIND -Paul asks the crowd if anyone has stuck around for 3 days to which most or the nut cases scream in approval. He then goes on to tell the crowd that they have never played this one live before. They then start this wonderful song about the poor eyesight of a really sick old bastard who chases after 16 year olds. Think about it I'm 93 your 16. Was this Anna Nicole Smith's wedding song?? By the way what is it with Gene and his fascination with 16-year-olds. This song is not the first one the other, Christine 16, I'm seeing a pattern forming here. Oh and one more thing, where did the line "Little lady from the line beneath the sea" suddenly appear from? Is it from the demo or "Little Lady" the original version of this classic?

GOT TO CHOOSE - Well here's another classic revived for this show. This version is played different that the original or Alive 1 version. How you ask? Well the intro is only played one time unlike it's original version of the above mentioned. I like how Paul sings this version a lot after the "Tell me if ya gotta go" instead of "c'mon" like on Alive he says actually screams "Tell me" kinda cool twist. Also before the start of the song Paul and Bruce both try to tune but opt to just switch guitars and let the roadie worry about the tuning. Paul jokes to the crowd about suddenly becoming musicians. BUT! there's one thing that bothers me here, the inserting of an Animalize live & uncensored clip while they switch guitars. This is only the beginning, read the rating for a full on ranting of this.

ROCK BOTTOM - Nice intro short version ala unplugged & played well by Bruce & Paul. This one was also a nice surprise to hear again. Paul as usual delivers a great performance. I would write more on this song but I didn't take notes on it so I'm improving must've dozed off while this was playing in the VCR. How's that for honesty? =D

SHE - Kick ass version (who am I Gerri Miller?) Anyhow very faithful performance and no Anthrax ending as compared to some later versions this line-up had become accustomed to. Nice little Ace jam at the end and even the little run Ace does at the end of his Alive 1 solo. GO BRUCE!

MAKIN LOVE - Another standout version hot-rodded by Eric Singer much to my delight and most other people's dismay. I'm sorry I'm a hypocrite I get mad when Bruce changed Ace's solo but like it when Singer & Carr changed Peter's parts. Go figure! (Shrugging my shoulders) I really like the ending with the cymbal catches and double bass stops he throws in just as a kick in the ass. I can almost hear some people (Ron from the Thought Vault) laughing at me for saying this. But then he probably expected me to say that. LOL

LET ME GO ROCK & ROLL -. Paul intros this one as one we used to close shows with. Since it's a short show it's a good one to end with and they get this place jumpin with the start of this one. New lyrics by me are as followed..."Genie looks tired, Genie wants to go. His manager told him no show no dough $$ yeah yeah." Moving along the jam goes well but they get to where Gene would play solo for a minute and hump his bass but they miss a cue and mess it up saying to me this wasn't rehearsed much. Don't fear, Bruce saves this with a perfect note for note version of Ace's solo. My hat goes off to Bruce while I'm on this subject he nailed every Ace solo to a tee on this entire set. Not his style with "Aceisms" thrown in the full Ace solo's which I thought was very cool of him. PARASITE - As much as I do love this song it really didn't belong in this set list. I'd rather have had Mr. Speed instead having heard this on the Revenge tour. By now it wasn't a rare live song anymore like the rest of the set list. It's like one of these things is not like the other (remember that one from the Electric Company along with the little black girl going to the market with her mom's list A loaf of bread a quart of milk and a stick of butter. If you never saw The Electric Company you're probably think what the hell is he talking about now? I have no friggin clue.) Sorry yeah I know what about the song. It's played in the same fashion as the Revenge version loud, fast and hard. Love them metal terms don't you?

RATING OF FOUNDATION FORUM 93

This video has a great set list is shot well with some great close ups but to be quite frank for a 2 camera mix it just plain sucks!! The editing is so horrible my 2 year old nephew could've done better. If you like what you've read as far as this review and want a copy this is good for comedy value and to teach you how NOT to edit. I'd highly recommend the single shot/handheld version of this show to really enjoy it. The sound is pretty much the same on both not the best of close-ups but you don't get clips of Animalize and the same shot of Eric standing up and flapping his lips while hitting the cymbals. So looking back with all this the handheld gets an 8 the 2 camera gets a 5 and that's being nice.

Thanks for checking out my monthly spewing on this page and a HUGE CONGRATS to Chris, Beth & John for hitting the 2 million mark. Here's to another 2 million. Well that's all kiddies for this month 'til next time.
Cheers
Psycho Circus Sept 22!!!!!!
