    Deuce's Review:

Just got a listen to the new Ace Frehley tribute album today, "Spacewalk."

    The Packaging:
Pretty basic packaging. The cover is VERY cool however! (Click here to view the cover) The graphics rock! The back also contains some cool outerspace graphics. The "CD" is a cool picture disk with the album cover art work displayed. The inside of the booklet has the usual liner notes of who played on each track and some cool outerspace graphics in the backgournd.

    The Music:

  • The first songs to start off this album is "Deuce" done by Marty Friedman. The guitar work on this song is very good, more of a metal feel. The vocals by Tom Gattis are adequette. Pretty faitful version. It is more straight ahead than Lenny Kravitz's version on KISS MY ASS.

  • The second song on this CD is "Shock Me" done by Gilby Clark. Gilby both plays guitar and does lead vocal here. You can't have an Ace tribute CD without this Ace "standard." Gilby does a fine job here both on lead guitar and on vocals. Gilby's "rough" sounding voice really lends itself here to this song. The lead work here is good as well.

  • The third song on this album is "Rip It Out" done by Scott Ian of Anthrax. Good choice for a song. Glad to see people choosing stuff off of Ace's solo album. It is my opinion that Anthrax is the BEST band to cover KISS / Ace material, bar none! Every cover song I hear Anthrax do of KISS' is great. Every one. This song is no exception. Scott Ian not only does lead guitar on this song but he sings. This song really rocks! It is very faithful to the original version.

  • "Hard Luck Woman" is the fourth song on this album. It is kinda mystifying to me why it is on here? It is not an Ace song. The song is performed adequette but it is not as good as Garth Brook's version on KISS MY ASS.

  • "Snowblind" is the next song and it rocks. great choice for a song to cover. Snake Sabo does a great job and Jason McMaster does a good vocal job here! He sounds like Ace! This song is one of those hidden gems you love to here over and over again. It sounds very fresh here.

  • The next song is "Rock Bottom" and it is argueably the best track on the album. Great vocal by Sebastian Bach. The guitars by Russ Parrish are pretty good and faithful to the original with some embelishments in the solo. But the overall great vocal is what carries this song!

  • The seventh track is "Parasite" done by Tracii Guns of L.A. Guns. This song is done very heavy! Very heavy guitar! Kevin Roentgen's vocals are good. Very good muddy / chunky sound!

  • The next song is Cold Gin done by Johun Norum. It takes the "experimental" approach. It is ok but nothing to special here.

  • The nineth song is "New York Groove" done by Bruce Bouillet. This song is my least favorite. It just does nothing for me. It also takes the "experimental" approach.

  • The final track on the domestic version is "Fractured Mirror" done by Dimbag Darrell and Vinnie Paul of Pantera. Very ominous beginning. But the songs is done VERY well! It is pretty faithful to the original version. I can really get into it. It is a good closer for this album.

  • The other two tracks are "Take Me to the City" a new Ace song and "Save Your Love" covered by Sebastian Bach. I was not able to review these songs due to the fact I only got a listen to the domestic version of this album. Both songs are available on the Japan version.

Overall, I would say it is a very cool album! It is different than KISS MY ASS in that is is more of a straight ahead rock and roll album that is faithful to the original versions of the songs whereas on KISS MY ASS the artists experimented a bit and added more of thier own flare to the songs. I happen to like both cover albums for what they represent and that the fact that they take differnet approaches. I highly recomend ALL Ace and KISS fans to pick up this album. I liked all the songs except (Cold Gin, New York Groove, and Hard Luck Woman). You won't be disappointed!
