Well, I just listened to the album twice, and alot of words are floating around in my head right now-SELL OUT, DESPARATION MOVE, DISSAPOINTMENT, and MOTLEY CRUE 1992 are among them. This album sounds exactly how I expected it to after reading the reviews on here. I wasn't shocked at all.
It sounds like the boys holed themselves up in a rehersal studio with some PANTERA, recent SKID ROW, SOUNDGARDEN, and AIC records, and came up with thier contribution to the Seattle scene. They are/were doing EXACTLY what Crue, Warrant, and Skid Row did when grunge hit:Pantera-like
crappy buzzsaw guitar tones, psyudo-funk metal grooves, and angry vocalizing. Every other song on here sounds like SPIT on Revenge, only heavier, thanks to the ultra 90's production job. The only song on here that has an identity of it's own is SEDUCTION OF THE INNOCENT.
YOU CONFESS starts out kinda cool, and quickly wallows back into 90's clicheland on the heavy parts.
THE JUNGLE is half-decent, and the string sections on I WILL BE THERE are good, but that's where the honeymoon ends for me.
I would be incredibly embarrased if this album came out-it just reeks of desparation to sell records. It sounds like EVERY OTHER 80's glam band that went heavy. I'd say only 10% of this record is even KISS-like. They sound like they've been influenced by every thing that's come out in the last 5 or 6 years and tried to adapt it to KISS. My GOD, i'm glad they decided to do the reunion instead of releasing this.
I just TOTALLY see through this attempt to fit in today-I'm just not falling for it. Sorry.
Part2:
Now that i've let it sink in, here's my song by song review:
HATE: Panteraesque riffs=garbage.
RAIN: Alice In Chains-esque=more garbage.
TELL ME: Sped up War Machine. OK chorus.
CHILDHOODS END: Starts out cool like Gene's solo LP, then goes south on the chorus-it's a rip off of "Searchin" from Chicago.
I WILL BE THERE: Cool string section, not much else.
THE JUNGLE: Almost Human vibe. cool except for the "Before the sun goes down"cheesy stops. strongest chorus on the lp.
S.OF THE INNOCENT: rip off of "Within you Without You" off Sgt. Peppers album.
IT NEVER ENDS: More AIC plagerisim.
IN MY HEAD: just plain weak.
YOU CONFESS: starts out like Gene's solo lp, but loses it on the choruses.
TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR: If KISS looked in the mirror while recording this song, they'd see SOUNDGARDEN staring back at them.
Heavy production or not, this is not a very strong record-it's just KISS mimicking the times, but it's 7 years too late. what's next? An industrial album from Cheap trick?? When i want to listen to Soundgarden, I'll put on a Soundgarden record.
