"Psycho Circus" Single Reviews

From: Howie U

Being a KISS fan from the beginning, I was psyched about what I would hear from the original guys after all of the years gone by, but at the same time, I was skeptical. All of the incarnations of the band have put out some great music, and all of the albums have held up in my eyes, especially "Rock And Roll Over" and "Revenge!" Admittingly, the band with Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer was probably the best lineup musically, and had a chemistry all their own, as well as when Eric Carr was the drummer, and I had hoped they wouldn't have broken up. But like most people say, Paul, Ace, Peter, and Gene definitely have the market cornered on the mystique in the music, and believe me, I'm not complaining!!

And this single does not disappoint!! When I downloaded the new song, I was scared! Ace and Peter were my biggest threat to the song, but as soon as Paul shouted out that opening scream, my fears were put to rest. This song kicks ass, and does not let up.

Paul vocals are massive, along the lines of "Heart Of Chrome" or " All Hell's Breakin' Loose" and he sings with an undeniable passion. Ace's solo is pure classic KISS, with no over playing, which is the way Ace works best in my opinion, and is probably responsible for the idea of the harmony guitars in the breakdown, reminiscent of "Detroit Rock City!" Gene, as always, lays down a perfect melody line that compliments the chugging guitars throughout the song, and I even hear a vocal harmony from Gene in the chorus that sounds alot like "Nowhere To Run" on Killers. Because of the botched recording in RealAudio format, I can't really tell what Peter is playing, but I do believe it is Peter, based on a couple of the fills in the verses. This IS Peter, no doubt about it!! The drum sound is huge on the chorus, which is uncharacteristic for Peter, but a necessity for the comeback that this is.

All in all, I absolutely love this song. It is honest, powerful, and has the kind of feeling that we have all came to know KISS for: Never giving up, and believing in yourself! I can't wait for the rest of the album!!
