"Psycho Circus" Single Reviews

From: Sean Cowie

During my standard surfing of my favorite KISS sites, I found a Real Audio version of the advance copy of the Psycho Circus single. All I can say is that it ROCKS!!

The chorus goes, "You're in the zone/ You're in the Psycho Circus/ Welcome to the show". What a great opening track this would be for a KISS show to get the audience pumped! Paul still can hit those high notes but he maintains a mellower vocal style keeping the screams at bay for the most part. Gene is virtually unheard, in fact I could barely hear a bass track. Ace's guitarwork isn't much to speak of though the poor recording I heard may be to blame for that. The solo is good but otherwise nothing exciting from Ace. After the guitar solo, Peter busts some chops with a great bass drum refrain. It's good to hear The Catman back in action again. Then we're treated to some slurred vocals from what sounds like two Paul tracks played over one another.

This song is not anything like the Destroyer-era material at all; I would liken it more to the Creatures era--heavy, hard rock. In other words, KISS has picked up where they left off when Ace hit the road in '82. But what will the album be like....
