"Psycho Circus" Album Reviews

From: Disco

HEY everyone!!!!Let me start by saying that I'm a big Kiss fan,but only when it comes to the '70's stuff. The 80's+90's where okay with a few good songs(I love it loud,Lick it up,Domino)but overall I did'nt like the 80's and 90's stuff with the same passion as the "CLASSIC"stuff of the 70's.So this review is coming from the heart of a "DESTROYER"&"ALIVE II"loving fan.

Another point is that i have'nt heard the entire album, just 1 or 2 minute snippets of songs off the Net.But I do think I've heard enough to get the idea for every song.So when the album comes out officially and I buy It,my opinion might change.

Okay, I guess I'll take it track by track(1=worst-5=best)

PSYCHO CIRCUS-I like the carnival music, sets a nice tone to open the Album, but the song itself is mediocre, does'nt do much for me .80's Paul.(2stars)

WITHIN-I like this song, kinda COS(many people have said this)Gene's not quite the demon, but it does have a creepy feel to it (3 stars)

I pledge Allegiance-PURE CRAP.Oh NO!!!!!!! I think I hear Slaughter coming, this is the worst 80's hairband song.We all know Paul can do MUCH better than this, maybe when I was in 7th grade I would have liked this one.(.5 stars, that's a half star, not a 5)

INTO THE VOID-And here comes ACE to save us from Pledge.Good classic ACE stuff, not as good as "rocket ride"or "shock me" but better than, let's say"torpedo girl"and the solo rips(3 stars)

WE ARE ONE-I like this song.Kind of a Gene '78 solo album sound. It's nice to see that Gene is branching out in new songwriting directions. Not quite the KISS sound, but a good song none the less(3.5 stars)

YOU WANTED THE BEST- We did'nt get it.This song isn't bad,but it just did'nt do anything for me.I can see myself possibly liking this more as I hear it more.It just seems like an excuse to use their long time slogan as a song title(2.5 stars)

RAISE YOUR GLASSES-Here are my thoughts on the 1st listen.Wow!! the guitar sounds cool....like the melody in the verse ALOT...Okay her comes the chorus....fingers crossed and..A giant TURD disguised as a chorus drops in the middle of this song.More cliche crap like Pledge.LOVED the verse.HATED the chorus.overall(2.5 stars)

FINALLY FOUND MY WAY-Even though this is an obvious attempt at another ballad in the "Beth" vein, this is a good song.another song that does'nt have that KISS sound, but good none the less.Since I'm a fan of 70's soft rock,I probably liked it more than some other KISS fans did.(3.5 stars)

DREAMIN'-Obviously Paul was dreamin' of Alice Cooper's 18.The rest is just KISS in the '80's.Does nothing for me.I'm really dissapointed in Paul on this Album. It's sad because he's capable of SO MUCH BETTER.Listen to DESTROYER through ALIVE II for quality Paul songs(2 stars)

JOURNEY of 1,000 YEARS-Another Gene song that I like(out of the 4 guys,I'm most pleased with Gene's stuff on this album)It has an ELDER feel to it .Though not the demon,it's good in it's own right.(3.5 stars)

OVERALL RATING-2.5 stars

I know we've all waited a long time for this album,but it's a dissapointment.Although I liked some songs ,I did'nt LOVE any like I would a DR. LOVE,LOVE GUN,DETROIT ROCK CITY,ROCKET RIDE,CHRISTINE 16,I could go on.....

And don't give me that"Well ,you can never have DESTROYER again because it's 20 years later and blah blah blah, can't live in the past".We all know that these aren'nt in the same league in quality as the songs I just mentioned.Believe me,I wanted just as much as every other KISS fan for them to come back and do a great album,STOP LYING TO YOURSELVES PEOPLE,this isn'nt the best KISS can do.I listened to LOVE GUN the other day after listening to these songs and it made me sad, great KISS songs just aren't on the new album.

We wanted the best, but what we got was an average album.

But I'll be there for the tour singin' along to Detroit Rock City as loud as ever.
