"Psycho Circus" Album Reviews

From: Michael Marks

First of all...the packaging and the enhanced CD are very cool. I like to hear Gene and Paul talking about Windows 95 and Microsoft Internet Explorer...

Here we go.

Psycho Circus - Welcome to the Show!!! The song itself is a little cheesy, but that's what makes Kiss so great. I like the intro and I love the visuals that Paul puts out there..."Make-up running down my face", "The amplifiers start to hum"...Kiss has always been about playing live and the visuals in this song make me feel as though I am at a Kiss show...Great song that I have played for a few friends and they all like it. I give it a 95/100.

Within - I really like this song. Gene really delivers here. I wonder who is really playing on this song? It does sound like it came from COS, but so what...it rocks. 90/100

I Pledge Allegiance... - Paul, Paul, Paul, and more Paul. I like the song...it makes me smile. The music is good...very upbeat. Nothing much else to say. 85/100

Into the Void - Great song in my opinion. All of Ace's Kiss songs are good and that includes his Kiss solo album. This song really makes me want to crank up the stereo and I love the way he sings. He has a terrible voice, but it fits the music so well. It makes me think more of Rocket Ride than any of his other Kiss stuff. I will say that there is no doubt in my mind that all 4 play on this song, but then again when I was a kid I thought all 4 played on Dynasty. 90/100

We Are One - I hit next after about 30 seconds on my first listen, but I have now listened to the whole album about 5 times and I actually love this song. This could be played on a number of radio formats. I am really proud of Gene on this one. It does not really sound like a Kiss song, but that is ok with me. I hope this song gets the airplay it deserves. 90/100

You Wanted the Best - The first listen brought laughter from me and my wife (who is also a major Kiss fan). The music kicks major butt, but the lyrics are kinda dumb. The more I listen the better it gets. The music saves this one. 75/100

Raise Your Glasses - This song is not bad, but not that good either. I can listen to the whole album and look at the song titles and think...how does Raise Your Glasses go? It is very much like 30 other songs that Paul has done. That does not make it bad, it just does not make it stand out. Rain on COS stood out because it was Paul, but it was different...this is not. 75/100

I Finally Found My Way - Not very good. It is good to hear Peter sing again. 50/100

Dreamin' - This is more like it Paul. This reminds me a little of I Still Love You off of Creatures. This song is not very original either, but it is very catchy. The guitar on this song sounds great. The lyrics aren't that bad either and when I look back at the song titles I think Dreamin' was pretty damn good. 85/100

Journey of 1,000 Years - Very cool...I am normally a bigger fan of Paul, but on this album Gene just does it for me. 85/100

If I average all this out I get 82/100 which may not be as high as it should be, but I think is a pretty good grade. I may have been a little tough on Peter? Anyway, this Album is good. Except for Revenge, this is my favorite top to bottom Kiss album since Dynasty. The 80's had their moments, but the albums weren't very good top to bottom. This album is a pleasant suprise to me...I expected worse. The production is great. The album sounds good on my car stereo which is something I cannot say about all Kiss albums. I really hope we see Kiss at #1 on Billboard next week.
