Psycho Circus Tour Reviews

From: Mikedrac@aol.com

KISS fans out there you WILL NOT be disappointed. I just saw both shows at the Fleet Center in Boston, MA and was extremely pleased with performances. Both nights were musically flawless. Keep in mind, however, that these are the first 2 shows of the tour and the bugs still need to be worked out.

The set list from the second show was rearranged from the first show and I thought that it flowed much better. Following is the set list: Psycho Circus, Shout It Out Loud, Deuce, Do You Love Me, Firehouse, Shock Me, Let Me Go Rock And Roll, Cold Gin, Calling Dr. Love, Into The Void, Makin' Love, God Of Thunder, 100,000 Years, Within, I was Made for Lovin You, King Of The Night Time World, Love Gun, Rock and Roll All Nite, Beth, Detroit Rock City, Black Diamond.

Psycho Circus - Great set opener and improves each night that it is played. Strong vocals from Paul and good harmony leads from Ace and Paul. Great drum fills from Peter. Two explosions in the song.

Shout It Out Loud - Works well as the second song. I think it can be replaced with You Wanted the Best. More Pyro...

Deuce - Guess what--More pyro like Kiss Alive....Ace broke a guitar string during the lead and compensated by playing it in a lower key. Ace saved it....

Do You Love Me - I love this song but because it was on the Reunion tour I thought they could drop it..But the crowd loves it so it remains...Good audience response!

Firehouse - Unlike the 1st show in Boston where it was the 8th song--they moved it to the 5th slot. Always a crowd pleaser, because everyone knows what Gene is going to do. I like this song in the front of the show instead of the middle.

Shock Me - Paul annouces Ace on this one..Good straight ahead rocker. Big surprise though, no guitar solo at the end like it normally happens....

Let Me Go...- Great arena song..I'm glad they kept it in the set list. Ace was wailing on this one. Peter kept the time along with good fills. At the end of the song--Gene high 5'd Ace indicating EXCELLENT solo work.

Cold Gin - Unlike the 1st night - no mistakes were made on the 2nd night. During the 1st night, Gene missed his cue to start singing and Ace jumped in right away, and sang most of the song. During the 2nd night, no problems with this one--another crowd pleaser. Like the 1st night night, Paul announces his Public Service Announcement to don't drink and drive... Just a quick note, they've done this song on every tour, with the exception of Love Gun and Dynasty. It's time to drop it and throw in Parasite. What do you think?

Dr. Love - Really tight song..The lights drop down to the stage and create some cool effects. No matter how much I like Bruce or Vinnie as guitar players, no one can ever copy the uniqueness of this solo as played by Space Ace.

Into the Void - 2nd song from the new Cd. Make sure you put your 3-D glasses on for this song. Strong guitar work from Paul and Ace. My only criticism is that the chorus needs to be stronger. The crowd didn't seem to get into it, but I'm sure as the tour progresses they will. The guitar solo was at the end of this song and was not preceded by the usual jam. Basically, it's the same solo as the reunion tour but much better playing. The solo doesn't last as long as the reunion tour. But Ace definately delivers with his smoking and flying guitar. After the guitar flies to the trusses, he grabs his rocket shooting guitar and starts playing the theme to 2001-Odyssey. Ace times his solo here to the 3-D effects on the screen. Very Spacey--You'll love it...

Makin' Love - I've been hoping that they'd play this live for a long time. It's my favorite live song. Paul announced this as a song from Love Gun but he couldn't remember. I thought they were going to play I Stole your Love, but he hit the chords to Makin' Love and I freaked. From the opening notes this song is HEAVY and powerful and needs no effects. Gene and Peter kept the strong backbone of song going and Paul just wailed on the vocals. Unbelieveable! I hope it remains in the set for the duration of the tour.

God of Thunder - In comparison to the 1st night, the drum solo was taken out of this song and added to a later song which will be discussed shortly. Gene does his usual crowd pleasing regurgatation of blood, then flies to the top of the light rig. No mishaps on the 2nd night but on the 1st, whoever was controlling his flying machine stopped short and Gene hit the rig with his stomach and guitar. He didn;t look to happy when that occured. Anyways, on the 2nd night the effects in this songs were amazing. Unlike the Reunion tour, the flames they used in this song were the flames they used in the 70's. These were columns of 30-40 fireballs that they kept shooting out of the stage at the end of the song. Very, Very intense--die hards will appreciate this one...

100, 000 Years - Next to Makin' Love, this is my 2nd favourite. Very bombastic song with Ace just jammed away on the leads. Paul does his rap in the middle of the song of Do you feel right.....and, again they use some bright flash pots and huge fireballs. Extremely reminescent of the Kiss Alive days.

Within - This song sounds really strong and HEAVY live. This looks like a difficult song to play live but the band comes through. Ace basically plays lead throughout the entire song and unlike the album version, a lead break is added. Paul augments the song by doing harmony vocals with Gene. Peter's drumming is in top form and very powerful. Peter's drum solo was moved from God of Thunder to this song. Anybody out there who has concerns about Peter's abilities as a drummer can dismiss them at this time. I do not want to spoil the surprise here for anyone, but Peter's drums rise up over the audience like a spaceship. I will not say anymore. Again, Peter downright kicked ass. I think the song and drum solo work best here.

I Was Made for Lovin' You - This song sounds much better live than on the album. Really powerful and alot of pyro.

King of The Night Time World - This song never sounded so good live as it does on this tour. It has become really tight, thick, and powerful. The lead breaks, vocals, drumming, and bass lines do not miss a note.

Love Gun - Paul truly goes over the top on this one. It is at this point that Paul finally gets to fly over the audience to the sound board where the mini stage is set up for him to sing the song from. You can really see during this song Paul's abilities to truley command an audience. Before he flies, he builds the crowd into a frenzy, starts the song and then flies from the main stage to the mini stage. I cannot capture the intensity of this moment in words. In short, Paul is the ROCK STAR.

Rock and Roll All Nite - This song works much better is the set closer in comparison to the 1st night's et closer, Detroit Rock City. Ace has a cool guitar effect during the solo which I do not want to spoil for those who have not seen the show yet. Again, alot of pyro.

Beth - Eveyone truly loves Peter and surprises everyone by wearing his platforms. A fine job vocally after playing his ass off all night.

Detroit Rock City - I like this song in this spot. The 1st night had the Black Diamond ending and rising drum platform while the second night it was taken out from the song. This song is climatic in itself and does not need modification.

Black Diamond - This song works best at the end of the show. Excellent effects at the end. I will not spoil the surprise.

In summary, I think this show does exceed the Reunion tour as promised by KISS. Someone else may have a different opinion. The band is tight, does really with playing the new songs and truly delivers a tidal wave of entertainment. The crowd was not rowdy, though you must consider that the majority of the audience are older and just want to be entertained. Well, enjoy the show everyone, you will not be diasppointed.
