Psycho Circus Tour Reviews

From: Kevin Drinan

Well, the first of two nights at the Fleet Center is over, and what can I say----- they were incredible. Since Dodger Stadium there have been some changes to the stage and to the set list, so let's get right to those:

2. Shout It Out Loud
3. Deuce
4. Do You Love Me
5. Let Me Go, Rock & Roll
6. Shock Me

17. Love Gun - (Paul flies)
18. Detroit Rock City

20. Black Diamond
21. Rock and Roll All Nite

The biggest surprise, obviously, was the inclusion of "Makin' Love", which (in typical Paul fashion) was introduced as a song from Love Gun. He turned to Ace and Gene to verify which album, and they didn't know either. Still, it was an excellent performance despite a couple of small mistakes by Peter.

I was really disappointed that they dropped "Nothin' To Lose" and "She", but I have a feeling they may be alternating one of them with "Makin' Love". We'll see what happens tomorrow. Peter's solo was moved back to "God of Thunder", and I believe Peter forgot to go back into the song afterward. Paul yelled out "Peter Criss on the drums!!!", and Peter did a big drum fill, and then banged on his cymbals, prematurley ending "God of Thunder". Paul looked at him and said "We've never ended the song like THAT before..."

Another interesting moment came when Gene blew the first line of "Cold Gin". He stepped up to the mike but went blank. Ace picked up the ball and sang the entire first verse as well as his usual second.

Those mistakes aside, they played great again. Peter is still going pretty strong, I hope he can keep it up for the whole tour. Paul was in excellent voice, too. (Which reminds me, they've added some effects to augment his voice during the final verse of "Psycho Circus", so it sounds more like the album).

The stage set-up is different than it was at Dodger Stadium. Rather than the stacks of speaker cabinets like those on the last tour, there were 2 stacks on either side of the stage, set up in a circular fashion, somewhat resembling the drum riser from the Dynasty tour. The drums still levitate, but there are no platforms for the other guys at the end of "Detroit" like there were in L.A.

The 3-D effects really weren't much better indoors, but to their credit there seemed to be a few more images to look at.

Ace has a new special effect rigged up to his flashing-light Les Paul. During the solo in "Rock and Roll All Nite", fireworks shoot out from the head stock in a circular pinwheel-type motion. It's pretty neat.

Lastly, I must mention that there was an opening band, Econoline Crush (not very interesting), and NO CIRCUS.
