Psycho Circus Tour Reviews

From: Steven Quintijn

Last night, I went to see KISS play at FOREST NATIONAL in Brussels. It was the 3rd time I went to see them play (2 times during the reunion tour). I don't really know whether the place was sold out, but it was packed. I think it holds something like 12.000 people.

We were sitting at the right side from the stage (Ace's side).

The show was scheduled to start at 08:00 and indeed, at 08:00 sharp Buckcherry started playing. They were not bad at all, quite good actually. The only sorry thing was that the lead singer (whose body looked like a comic books because it's covered with all kinds of smaller tattoos) was such an asshole. Constantly shouting "Do you have some cocaine ?" and other stupid things. They played for about half an hour.

The moving of Buckcherry's gear went smoothly and around 09:00 pm, we got what we were all waiting for : YOU WANTED THE BEST, YOU'VE GOT THE BEST, THE HOTTEST BAND IN THE WORLD : KISS. I think a KISS concert wouldn't be the same without this phrase. They jumped right into Psycho Circus, followed by Shout it Out Loud and Deuce. I think (I didn't write it down, so I might have skipped a song or misplaced the order) the full playlist looked like this :

Psycho Circus
Shout It Out Loud
Deuce
Do You Love Me?
Firehouse
Shock Me
Let Me Go, Rock 'N' Roll
Calling Dr. Love
Into The Void (+ Ace Solo)
King Of The Night Time World
God Of Thunder (+ Gene flying up to that little stage by the roof)
Within (+ Peter Solo)
I Was Made For Lovin' You
Love Gun (+ Paul flying to the other side of the arena)
100,000 Years
Rock And Roll All Nite

ENCORES :
Beth
Detroit Rock City
Black Diamond

I'm glad they put I WAS MADE back in, since it sounds great live, but I did miss COLD GIN.

I have to admit that this show was the worst of the three I've seen. Normally FOREST NATIONAL has a perfect acoustic (the first time I saw KISS play there, I really thought they were playing a CD and playbacking - it was that perfect), but this time the sound was lousy. The guitars were too loud compared to the microphones. One could hardly hear (not to speak of understand) the singing. Major fuckup by the sound boys. I have to say this got a bit better towards the end (or else, I was getting used to it...). They used less pyro as well. In reviews from other shows I usually read that they used more pyro, but this was not the case in Belgium. But there was something weird about the entire show. Paul was the only one that moved around a lot, but Gene and Ace didn't seem to be in great shape. I'd say either they were tired, either there's something going on on the inside. Raps between the songs were kept to a minimum and they weren't fooling around with eachother or interacting a lot. I was really under the impression they were thinking "Let's get this thing over with and go home." Sometimes a song was only partly played and they sometimes jumped from one song into another for several songs in a row.

I wasn't sure what to expect from the 3D effects, since reactions to it have been mixed. I think they were just great, much better than what I had expected. I was sitting at the side and even from there, you could clearly enjoy the 3D stuff. 3D wasn't on all the time, but still quite a good part of the show. A message appeared on the screen each time you had to put on the 3D glasses or take them off. Pre-recorded animations and movies were switching with live footage all the time.

All in all, the show was still great, as is every KISS show. To me the highlight of the evening was Ace's Solo, but that's been always the case since I am such a big Ace Frehley fan. It was nice to see Peter's drum move towards the audience during his solo. Something new for a change.

Although there were some less positive things to say about this show, I'd still say this was A SHOW WHERE THE BIG BOYS HAVE SHOWN THE REST AGAIN HOW THE GAME SHOULD BE PLAYED ! I'm really looking forward to my next KISS show and I truely hope there will be a lot more to come. Rock and Roll all night and party every day !!!! KISS RULE !!!!
