Psycho Circus Tour Reviews

KISS in 3-D, live in Frankfurt, March 9

KISS once again made a triumphant return to Europe, this time on the Psycho Circus 3-D World Tour 1998-1999. On March 9 KISS kicked ass in a (almost) sold out Festhalle in Frankfurt, Germany. Having seen the opening show on the tour, the Halloween concert at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, I quickly found out that in the meantime the band and the stage effects have much improved. In particular the 3-D effects are much more impressive now, and the band plays more tight. Also, there were different pyrotechnics, and one of the coolest effects was the spinning fireworks display on the neck of Ace's Gibson Les Paul during the solo in Rock And Roll All Nite. Unfortunately there's not much change from the KISS Alive/Worldwide Tour 1996-1997. Besides the 3-D video footage, the only real addition to the show is Peter's hovering drum riser which is a very impressive sight. During his drum solo the platform Peter is sitting rises into the air and moves forward to the edge of the stage where it keeps hanging until Peter's finishes his solo, which by the way has some electronics drum pads included now too.

As for the songs, there's no single surprise (or it must be the running order of the songs) as we're treated once again on classics such as Deuce, King Of The Night Time World, Firehouse, Detroit Rock City, Shock Me and Shout It Out Loud. Obviously, three songs from the latest album Psycho Circus are part of the set list too: opener Psycho Circus, Into The Void (which includes Ace's guitar solo during which he shoots one or more lights from the lighting rig down to the stage) and Within. Although these songs don't come off very well live, Within has a much nicer groove live than on the album. As for trademark KISS spectacle, Gene of course still spits blood and flies to the top of the ceiling before God Of Thunder, he stills breaths fire, Ace still moves in a standard pattern and Peter's drums rise all the way into the air during Black Diamond. Not to mention all the fireworks and flames that are being displayed during the two hour show.

Paul, who has a brace around his left knee and isn't running around like he used to do, not only flies over the crowd when Love Gun starts, this time he also steps down from his little platform in the middle of the venue to high five with the fans standing behind the crash barriers around the small platform. As per usual, I Was Made For Lovin' You seems to be the most popular song of the set as everybody started singing the words when the first chords were heard. During the encores, Peter stills comes out on his own to sing the ballad Beth sitting on a drum stool in front of the stage. Then the rest of the band joins him at stage center again to take their bows before they end the concert with two more encores. Black Diamond ends the two hours of rock and roll mayhem.
