Psycho Circus Tour Reviews

From: Bob Rodrick

I'm gonna forget that I was sitting around a bunch of out of control, drunken/wasted fans. I'm gonna ignore the fact that there was a sex crazed couple sitting right next to me, making out with each other all damned night (at one point it looked like she was gonna go a little further, if you know what I mean, but the security caught them in time!) I'm gonna concentrate on the show.

I went in knowing about the set list and I have to be honest: that was the complete lowpoint in the show. I was very disappointed that it was pretty much a rerun of the reunion tour set list. After reading about all of the great songs Kiss was working up in the Goldmine article, I was really let down. It was good to hear "Makin' Love," but it was played so sloppily, I really couldn't enjoy it. "I Was Made for Lovin' You" was also pathetic, it just has to be dropped from the show.

With that out of the way, I have to say the rest of the show was well worth it. The stage and the production itself was more impressive than the reunion tour. The lights were fantastic. The screen shots were really well done, and the 3-D effects were better than what I had imagined. Even though, they got a bit repetitious, they pretty much lived up to all the hype. I was glad to see that there was a lot more pyro (Ace's guitar trick during "Rock and Roll All Nite" is mindblowing), Paul's flying trick was stellar. I hadn't seen it yet. He flew right over us (I was sitting on the floor). The sound monitor on the screen was a great touch and the whole thing was so well done. Peter's drum solo and his drum riser were sights to behold. Great effects. To me, this time out, Peter is the highlight of the show, much like Ace was during the reunion. Peter is playing so well and he's so tight. I'm so happy to see him in such great shape. I wish I could say the same for Gene. He's embarrassingly overweight. I don't know what's going on with him, but he really better be careful. A man his age exerting himself the way he does is a very dangerous situation. I don't want to know if ever collapses from being so out of shape. Paul is always top notch. No other rock front man blows me away like he does. His voice never gives out and there's not an ounce of fat on him. Ace is also in great shape and played well.

I also wish they would do a little more with the light up logos, but when they do shine, they're blinding. That could be why we don't see too much of them during the show.

Aside from the disappointing set list I was happy with the show. I hope they throw some songs out and add some more great old relics down the line.

By the way, I was also at the Madison Square Garden show and everything I said about the Meadowlands can be said here as well. The only difference was that there was less pyro at this show from some reason. It may have to do with New York zoning laws and what they allow for pyrotechnics. I thought the Meadowlands show was more impressive.
