Psycho Circus Tour Reviews

From: Jose Antonio Zorrilla V.

When KISS came to Mexico in the Reunion Tour, they gave three sold-out shows in the Sport Palace in Mexico City. I went to all of them. It seems that it could be enough. But not for me . Not for a kissfan. I went again to the gig in Foro Sol. And I wanted the best and I got the best.

I thought I should begin my review with this statment because I have read a lot of bitchin' in the internet about the Psycho circus shows being pretty much the same than Reunion tour. I won't discuss it. Maybe they're right. But it doesn't mean that the Psycho Circus show ain't worth seeing

Actually, this time I felt KISS was in a more appropriate stage. (To make yourselves an idea, compare Cobo Hall with Tiger Stadium.) so the Pyro effects could be displayed so much better. Also, I don't understand why many people in their reviews didn't seem to like the 3- D stuff. I expected LESS of it, but I became really satisfied of the whole concept.

Well, now there goes the review song by song:

After the Rammstein show, (I won't say much about them. This is a KISS website, not a Rammstein one. I'll just say that I liked them) and 30 minutes of a nervous wait, finally the lights turned off, and we heard the voice of Mr. Rozner. Or better said: we REPEATED the words of Mr. Rozner: "Alright Mexico, you wanted the best, you got the best. The hottest band in the world, KISS!!!!!!!!" And the Circus curtain fell off. The first words of "Psycho circus" told everything. "Hello, here I am, here we are, we are one" We really were one. not only in this song, but in every one. All the songs were sung for every soul in this huge place. (Except maybe, for Within and Into the void. Not all the people seemed too familiarized with this 2 new songs) The next one to come was "Shout it out loud. Words are not enough to describe the reaction to this song. Then Paul said a couple of words in Spanish and introduced the next song asking us if we had the first KISS album. Everybody knew it was Deuce. It was time to introduce the 3 -D effects, and the first song to feature it was "Do you love me?" "Firehouse" with sirens and Gene breathing fire closes the first part of the show.

Now, it was the turn of the Space Lord. Ace sang "Shock me" with a lot of energy, and "Let me go rock and roll" seems to be made for his personal shining. The show continued with "Calling Dr. love" and "Into the void" with Ace's solo. Virtuosy, smoke, a homage to Stanley Kubrick, two guitars, one of them flying, and two rockets are the best words to describe it. After this, "a song from Destroyer": "King of the night time world."

THe Demon's highlight had come. Gene spitting blood and flying to the top of the stage is something we can't never get tired of it. Obviously the song which was "God of thunder" but this time, the drus solo was reserved for other song, and Gene went down of the plataform with the lights off while Ace was playing the lead break of the song. "God.." was immediately connected with "Within". A really good rendition of the song. Then, the drum kit rises and Peter show us that he is in the best moment of his career with an amazing solo.

Some people came to the concert just to see KISS play "I was made for lovin' you " It is their biggest hit here in Mexico and it was one of the highlights of the show. I liked it but I think that KISS have much better songs. The proof was that the best was about to come. "It is my favorite part of the show" said Paul, and he was taken to the center of the foro Sol, like a modern Tarzan, to sing "Love Gun". I felt chills right down my spine. Not everyday you see a man playing and singing in a little plataform rounded by 55 000 people.

Gene played the intro of "100 000" years and he walked out of the stage, right over a Kiss Army banner for the first and only time on the concert. (By the way, a little detail. He used his two basses in this concert. The Kramer axe bass, and the Punisher)In this song, Paul sang the now classic line "Do you feel alriiight????". "Rock and roll all nite" is played before expected, and tons of confetti, a new effect with an helix spreading fire sparkles in Ace's guitar and another guitar smashed for Paul's record is displayed. It seems that the show is over.

Not at all. Peter returns to sing "Beth". He seemed too happy to hear that enourmous amount of people singing the song with him. The bands returned and "Detroit Rock City" was transformed to "Mexico Rock City". Then came an almost endless intro from Mr. Paul Stanley, that included "Guantanamera" (When the hell will Paul understand that this song ain't Mexican, but Cuban) and "La Bamba" (Great!!!!!) Paul began to sing the first line of Black Diamond and interrumped to ask Peter to say us something. He just said "I love you all" . Finally, the starchild performs the intro right, and "Black diamond" became the last song of the best of the KISS' concerts I have been. And, obviously, the best concert of my life. I knoww, there were a lot of good songs they didn't play, but the only way to make a perfect KISS setlist is with a 35 songs show including "Creatures..." and "Revenge..." songs. And even this way, there could be people bitchin' about the show "being too damn long". Anyway, I think a KISS show is a wonderful experience that you can't describe with just words. You have to be there to understsnd it. And I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I wanted the best, and I got the best.
