Psycho Circus Tour Reviews

From: Steinar Sirevag

KISS live in Oslo Norway 02/28/99

I really looked forward to this show, it's was my second KISS show ever (the first being the ALIVE 96/97 show in Oslo Dec 1996). After the usual awful "opening" act, some awful glam band or sometihng that sounded like Guns and roses on a very bad day, I was unable to speak to anyone out of excitment. Then the red curtains with stars and moons on them fell down and people went wild. After fifteen minutes or so the lights went off, and people went nuts once more, me included. And then, "You wanted the best, you got the best...". I was waiting for the Psycho circus intro, but it never came, there were some "music" or something that I couldn't figure out. And then the band started playing, the curtains fell and schkabonk; there they were! The sound were terrible, but I could hear that they were playing "Psycho circus". After reading several tour reviews, there weren't any big surprises really, and the show was almost identical to the reunion show. Paul wasn't so hyperactive as last time; wheter that was good or bad depends on if you like his go go dancing or not. Gene seemed to be more energetic than last tour, Ace too and Peter. Ace played a far better solo this time, I especially liked the "2001" bit. Peter also played a more interesting solo; some parts were actually fast and cool. Pauls solo was embarrasing. They seemed to have more fun last time I saw them, especially at the end of the show where they were running around on stage after the show and had a Viking helmet they put on eachothers heads. I guess it's not a good thing to look for surprices at a KISS show (if you've seen one before that is), but I was amazed that "Within" were so good live and that song got one of the best responses of the evening actually! Cold gin were the best song last time I saw them, and it was also one of the very best songs this time. Peter didn't seem to be as excited about "Beth" this time as the last tour; I can't blame him; how fun can singing to playback be after rocking out behind drums in an hour and a half? Some parts of the show were better than the Alive show in '96, but some parts were worse as well. The sound in the start were really bad, but it got better as the show went on. And the 3-D stuff; forget it. There were too much light on stage to really see anything. And people don't go to shows to stare at a screen for almost noe third of the show. But KISS is KISS, and they will always be KISS, and I really like KISS, so... But I have to point out the stupidity of touring to support an album they only play three songs from (the third being of course "Into the void", which Ace did seemed to be more excited about than playing "Shock me" for the billionth time). I think the "Psycho circus" album is their best since "The elder", and they could easily played most of the songs on PC live. I have a funny feeling this is their last ever tour to support a record. They may release another record or two (or three), but I have a funny feeling that the next tour will be the last tour. You'll see if I'm right or not. Thanks anyway; Peter, Paul, Ace and Gene!
