KISS Farewell Tour Reviews

From: Mike McCormick
My favorite part of a Kiss concert are those last few moments before the lights fall and the band comes on. The excitement builds until finally "You wanted the best...." only tonite we heard about every other word of the intro due to sound problems. This set the tone for the eveving. The opening was spectacular. The band drops from the ceiling on a podium before launching into Detroit Rock City. From there on out it was pretty much your standard Kiss outing. Ace flubbed a major part in Firehouse and then provided the audience with a dopey grin. Gene had to rescue Ace during 2000 man as it appeared that he had gotten lost. I found myself with an uneasy anticipation all night the somebody was going to completely fuck up a song. How can you play the same songs night after night for years and still make such obvious mistakes? That's just Kiss.

Then came the Spinal Tap moments. Upon Gene's descent from the lighting truss during God of Thunder the cable stopped about four feet from the ground leaving Gene dangling helplessly like some trapped lizard. Roadies ran out and placed a box under his feet that still wasn't quite high enough but they managed to get him down. Paul sang the last verse while this was happening. Several songs later it's Paul's turn to be completely humiliated. After making his big speech about coming out to be with the people he got stuck in mid air over the tenth row. Gene attempted to sing Love Gun while roadies tried to get Paul down. The most embarassing thing was the it was obvious Gene didn't know the words!! He was just making stuff up!. Paul eventually was rescued and they started the song over. The rest of the set was filled with an uneasy tension and it was obvious they wanted the show to end soon. Black Diamond was awesome and rock n' roll all night really rocked with two confetti cannons showering the building. If not for the technical problems this would have been an incredible show. As it was it was great but unfortunately it's not the way I want to remember Kiss.
