KISS Farewell Tour Reviews

From: David Mischoulon
After rousing sets from Skid Row and Ted Nugent (including “Kiss My Ass,” in which he bad-mouthed practically everyone in the U.S. government, including Massachusetts’ beloved Ted Kennedy—Nugent has cojones!), we got what we were waiting for…At around 8:45 PM, the familiar voice began: “Mansfield…You wanted the best, you got the best...” And then our heroes appeared on the stage, blasting into “Detroit Rock City”. The boys were as energetic as ever and looked as though they were having the time of their life. Their voices were great, the pyrotechnics perfect, and the songs followed each other smoothly, with minimal pauses in a very dynamic, polished performance. Hard to believe that they are in their 50s! Ace played and sang with great enthusiasm, grinning at the audience from time to time during “Shock Me” and “2000 Man”. Gene delivered his fire-breathing stunt on “Firehouse” and the blood feast during his bass solo. Paul was, as usual, a great frontman, continually stro! king the audience throughout the evening with gratitude for “proving the critics wrong.” The boys used the Tweeter Center’s multiple video screens to their advantage. During “Do You Love Me”, they showed various video clips from Kiss’ past, including concerts and early photos of the band. Ace’s “2001” guitar solo featured a computer animated clip of a guitar travelling from earth into space, reminiscent of the monolith from 2001. During “2000 Man” they treated us to a computer-animated KISS adventure in which they battle various space bad guys and gals. “Psycho Circus” featured some of the graphics from the last tour, though (thankfully!) only in 2D this time. Interestingly, Gene did not fly upward during “God of Thunder”, presumably because the ceiling at the Tweeter Center was too low. However, there were risers for each of the singers, which were used on “Rock and Roll all Nite”. Paul traveled into the audience for “Love Gun”, after the crowd yelled loud enough to get the sound-meter into the “red area”. Peter carried off his “100,000 years” drum solo without a flaw, and rose high with his drum set for “Black Diamond”. He sang a sweet, mellow “Beth”, for the first encore, enveloped by strobe lights, occasionally shaking hands with audience members. The final encore, “Rock and Roll all Nite” was a blast, of course! Confetti all over the place from the start of the song, sparks from Ace’s guitar, and fireworks galore. Paul thanked the audience profusely for the 27 years of support, reminded us to always expect the best from all the bands we see, and asked us to always remember KISS. How could we not remember such a great show? Gene, Paul, Ace and Peter, you will never be forgotten. THANK YOU!!!!!!!
