KISS Farewell Tour Reviews

From: Allan Athans
Well here is the review of the show: Skid Row roared on stage a little before 7pm. They sounded really good. I was actually impressed with the new guy, sort of. He wasn't great, but on the heavy stuff he sounded pretty good. He ain't no Sebastian Bach. Sebastian was missed. Dude was doing a fair job until "18 and Life". Dude was having trouble hitting the high notes, but when it got heavy he sounded okay. At this point I'm telling myself, dude ain't so bad. And then they began playing "I remember you", MISTAKE! Dude sounded horrible. It was kind of funny though, it got to the point that dude wouldn't even try to hit the high notes, he would just point the mic out to the audience to sing the chorus, because he couldn't hit the notes. It wasn't until that point that chants of, "Bring back Sebastian" began from the restless crowd. Before they got out of control, the band launched into Youth Gone Wild, to close the show. They played about 30 minutes.

About 7:40 Ted Nugent runs onto the stage. I have to admit, not being a big Ted fan, that the Nuge put on a good show. Ted was everywhere. He cracked me up, everytime he soloed his facial expressions were classic. He looked as though he was having sex or about to take a mean dump. His sound was really good. Believe it or not, he seemed to have more energy than the last time I saw him open for Kiss in 84. He covered all of his classics. I also have to hand it to Ted for recruiting such an awesome back up band. Tommy Aldrich played his ass off on the drums. He is one of the best. He played for about an hour.

About 9:00pm the light went down and the ever familiar yell of "Hey Houston, You wanted the Best, ......, began. Next thing you know Kiss is being lowered from one of the lighting rigs. They grab their axes and out comes Detroit Rock City. The sound was perfect. Next they played Deuce and then my favorite Shout it out Loud. The set list blurs from there, but I pretty much recall everything played. Here is the list I remember, but maybe not in this order. Heaven's on Fire, Dr. Love, Lick it up, Love Gun, 100,000 years, Black Diamond, Psycho Circus, Firehouse, Shock Me, 2,000 man, God of Thunder, I Love it Loud, Do You Love Me; Encore: Beth, Rock n Roll All Night. It was a magical night. The guys looked like they were genuinely having agreat time. At one point Gene went over to Ace and started sticking out his tounge, so Ace decided to join in, and Gene licked him. Ace started cracking up and ran away from Gene. It was hilarious. Highlights of the show were when Paul came out into the audience and sang Love Gun. Gene outdid himself on God of Thunder. I swear he looked like a demon straight out of the exorcist after he spit blood. He rolled his eyes back and with the geen light and blood dripping from his chin, dude looked freaky. Also Pete was totally on. It seemed like some of the songs were a little slower than usual live. I attributed it to Peter's arm problems, but he didn't miss a beat. And Ace was Ace, awesome as always. I couldn't get over the fact on how sincere they were. It really seemed like they were going to miss it. Last note, all of the songs came off great with the exception of Psycho Circus. It's a great song, but it didn't go over well live. I think the backing vocals were off. All in all, it was probably my favorite time to see Kiss out of the 15+ times I've seen them. I will definitely miss them.
