KISS Farewell Tour Reviews

From: Jeff
This was my third show of the tour; the other dates were Louisville back on April 29th, and Indianapolis on May 20th. I knew going in that the Indy show from May would be hard to top because I had second row seats right in front of Paul on that night, but KISS did not let me down.

First of all, this was the first time that KISS had ever played Conseco Fieldhouse, home to the Indiana Pacers. It seats 18,300 for basketball and 19,000 for concerts, so I was told by a ticket broker. Anyway, the crowd was ready for hard rock, and they were treated to just that.

Arrived good and early to purchase three new t-shirts, then stood out in the concourse and listened to Skid Row. Nothing against the Skids, they just don't do anything for me. Next was Ted Nugent, and he was his usual self. Nice set list, I think almost exactly the same as the previous Indy show. He mentioned his usual right wing beliefs, and even got in a promo for Bobby Knight. Funny thing is, the Corporal, or General, or whatever the hell that idiot is, was fired the next day by Indiana Univ. Of course, Ted isn't Ted unless he mentions his "love songs" will have "the faggots eating pussy tonight!"

Ted doesn't bother me the way he does other KISS fans. He rocks, he has fun, and like KISS, he's getting on in years, so more power to the Motor City Madman!

Now, on to the boys. The crowd was very anxious, I thought, to get KISS on stage. The atmosphere was great as we waited for the lights to dim. I would estimate the crowd somewhere between 11,000 and 13,000. Maybe 14,000. Never did see a review in the Indy Star, which always gives the attendance. Anyway, at about 9:25, the lights dimmed and it was showtime!

Here is the setlist, which was the EXACT same as the previous Indy show:

Detroit Rock City
Deuce
Shout It Out Loud
I Love It Loud
Shock Me
Firehouse
Do You Love Me
Dr. Love
Heaven's On Fire
Let Me Go, Rock And Roll
2000 Man (Ace Solo)
Psycho Circus
Lick It Up
God Of Thunder (Gene Solo)
Cold Gin
100,000 Years
Love Gun
I Still Love You/Black Diamond
***************
Beth
Rock And Roll All Nite

This is one of my only problems with KISS: They seldom stray from a standard set list. Since this is the exact list as the previous Indy show, one might think that they would throw in a few twists. Oh well, on to the highlights.

First of all, I am tired of all the Peter Criss bashing. He sounded damn good, he looked great, and he singing was excellent, ecspecially on "Beth". Funny thing, though, there was no drum solo. Overall, Peter seemed to enjoy himself big time!

Paul, as always, never looked better. I swear, he looks 25 years old up on that stage. His voice was excellent, and he even commented "this is the first time we've played this place", meaning of course brand new Conseco Fieldhouse.

Gene was perfect, as he always is in the make-up eras. I don't think I've ever seen a bad performace out of Gene when in make-up. I've never seen a bad performance out of Paul...period!! At one point during Gene's bass solo, up on the lighting gear, he called one of the spotlight dudes an asshole for aiming too low. Uh, ok. Whatever.

Ace was spacey as is the norm for him. He played well, and probably is looking forward to the end of the tour. I love Ace, but I think he's ready to call it quits.

Overall, I thought KISS sounded damn good and LOUD. Very loud for a modern day rock concert, considering the way bands don't play as loud as they used to.

Very visual show; lotsa nice pyro. My 30th KISS show overall. They left the stage at about 11:25, so a perfect two-hour show. Was very pleased. Will see them probably for the last time on September 23, in Hamilton, Ontario. Hard to believe they are almost at the end.

I hope the Hamilton show is a special one. I don't want it to end....
