KISS Farewell Tour Reviews

From: Joel Kolsrud
Tremendous. What other words are able to describe the ultimate live rock and roll show? Added to that the fact that it was my birthday, well, it was the best present I could've had. The amazing part of this entire tour is the sellout crowds night after night. This being the second time in the last three tours where no new material was played...it's an incredible accomplishment. Is this what fans look for in today's music scene? Aging rockers reliving an era gone by for that last trip down memory lane? What is going to happen when the novelty of reunion tours, comeback tours and farewell tours runs out? Tomorrow will get here one way or another, but living yesterday won't do anything to further the life we live. However, if just for those few fleeting moments, the memories of yesteryear are deemed as being worth it. While KISS were reviled by critics and cursed by parents during the early course of existence, they gave the fans more than enough reason to stick to their! belief in KISS. This was none the truer in Moline Tuesday night, even despite everything else. After all...KISS is KISS.

The new Skid Row lineup (new frontman and drummer) stomped out thirty minutes of Bach-era tunes. John Holsinger may not actually be Sebastian Bach (something that's been beat to death in nearly every review), but he gave it an honest effort and the crowd seemed to enjoy them. Actually, they seemed to be enjoying themselves as well. Set list for Skid Row: Slave To The Grind, Riot Act, Piece Of Me, 18 And Life, Monkey Business, I Remember You, Youth Gone Wild.

Ted Nugent received the expected hero's welcome. Uncle Ted has probably played the Quad Cities one thousand times, but he proved that he's still the Quad Cities' favorite sh*tkicker of rock and roll. I'm convinced that Nugent could be mute and still get an arena full of rockers to raise both fists in the air, all the while screaming, yelling and shouting. This is the eighth time I've seen Ted live, and as a three piece he was real solid. Nice to see Tommy Aldredge on the skins. A real legend of rock and roll drummers. Made a good rhythm section with Mark Mendoza on bass. Ted's banter was a scream. Especially during "Kiss My Ass". Before playing Cat Scratch Fever he stated that "all the faggots will be eating pussy tonight". For a 51-year old man, Nugent had the crowd in a rage. And we hadn't even seen KISS yet. Set list for Ted Nugent: Stormtroopin', Paralyzed, Wang Dang Sweet Poontang, Free For All, Dog Eat Dog, Kiss My Ass, Cat Scratch Fever, Stranglehold, Great White Buffalo.

KISS. Well, what more can be said. This was officially KISS' fifth time in the Quad Cities and it was all there: VERY bright lights, blood-spitting, fire-breathing, smoking guitar, the pinwheel on Ace's headstock, explosions, fireworks, confetti, sirens, demons flying, guitars shooting, etc., etc., etc. The stage was massive, too! Everything came off without a hitch. No mishaps or malfunctions. Just two solid hours of rock and roll. They definitely showed their age, but that didn't deter from the performance in any way, shape or form. The secret trick to Peter's playing is that his sound is all soundboard. His kit is set up so that when he "hits", the gates hooked up to each part of the set sound thunderous, even though he's barely touching them. Still, he never missed a beat. Paul came out into the crowd for "Love Gun", something he's done the past three tours. Still a really cool prop. All in all, this was without explanation. Like I said before...after all...KISS is KISS..! ...This is mostly in order, with songs 11-15 being unsure of, although the rest are correct...but this is the set list for KISS: Detroit Rock City, Deuce, Shout It Out Loud, I Love It Loud, Shock Me, Firehouse, Do You Love Me, Calling Dr. Love, Heaven's On Fire, Let Me Go Rock And Roll, 2000 Man, Cold Gin, Lick It Up, Psycho Circus, God Of Thunder, 100,000 Years, Love Gun, I Still Love You/Black Diamond, Beth, Rock And Roll All Nite
