If You Were KISS' Manager...
From: KISS ASYLUM
Okay, here's the scenario: You're a fan of KISS. You've been a fan for along time and have seen members come and go, the music change over the years, the makeup disappear and reappear. You've had the occasional friend treat you like a geek for liking the band. You've had the bystanders tsk-tsk'ing over your KISS t-shirt. Nevertheless, the band has always had a special place in your heart and you've bought the albums, the videos and even some of the merchandise. You believe in the band and think that, while they do occasionally do some very odd things, they're great. One day, the band members find out that their management has left. So has their rep at the record label. In a quirky moment of fate, the four members decide to pick a fan to come up with ideas for what they should do. They pick you because they've seen your comments on the KISS Asylum bulletin-boards one too many times and think, "hey, let's give this fan a chance. Can't be any worse than what we have had in the past!" You've got six months to prove your worth, with unlimited access to the label and the KISS Company. The band has also agreed to act upon your suggestions instead of out-right dismissing them. What would you do to make KISS hotter than ever before?

Why Did "Detroit Rock City" Do Poorly At The Box Office?
From: KISS ASYLUM
"Detroit Rock City" has been in movie theaters for three weeks, yet had taken in only 3.6 million dollars by the end of its second week. The movie opened #13 at the box office and in its second week slid to #19. In many cities across the US the movie is already out of the theaters. What happened? KISS fans seemed to love the movie. In KISS ASYLUM's last KISS poll we asked the fans what they thought of "DRC" and from the great response of 2800+ votes they responded very positively! The breakdown is as follows: Awesome 49% (1394 Votes), Pretty good 29.4% (836 Votes), Just ok 10.5% (301 Votes), It blows 7% (201 Votes), Not great 3.8% (110 Votes)

This week KISS ASYLUM asks the online fans their thoughts on why the movie did poorly at the box office? Click over to www.kissasylum.com/poll2/ to cast your vote and make your opinion heard. UNION Album & Band Update
From: www.unionasylum.com
The band has recently finished mixing the new album at A&M studios. We are mastering and sequencing and finalizing art work and credits in the next two weeks. We want everyone to know that release is pushed back until February of 2000 and we apologize for that. When our new label Spitfire takes out advertisements in Metal Edge etc., they need to place the ad three months before it hits the stands. Our delays in making this record were unforeseen with our producer's schedule, studio availability, and of course the desire to make a great album; no one could predict that when these ads were placed. More importantly, we are thrilled with the new disc, and of course can't wait to share it with you all. People outside of the record business do not realize that when you hand over the finished product in September, you cannot get it manufactured and in the stores by the end of the year. Record companies do not put out product too late in the year because of the holiday season. The song titles on the new album are: Shine, Do You Know My Name, I Wanna Be, Everything's Alright, Dear Friend, Who Do You Think You Are, No More, Do Your Own Thing, Dead and Hypnotize.UNION will take a break in September and news will be coming about possible shows on the West coast and overseas as they develop. Thanks again for the support. Keep in touch via UNION99@aol.com and visit www.unionasylum.com often for updates.

Paul Stanley's "Phantom" to Re-Haunt Toronto
From: MTV via Steve Araki
KISS member Paul Stanley will be reprising his role as "The Phantom" for an extra 40 performances of the musical "The Phantom Of The Opera," according to the "Toronto Sun." Stanley starred in the Toronto stage production from May 21 until August 1, and will now return for another run from September 28 to October 31. The play was supposed to have closed following a special tenth anniversary performance on September 26, but the run has been extended. The paper reported that a change in KISS' tour schedule allowed Stanley the opportunity to revisit his "Phantom" role. The band will not be hitting the road until the year 2000. In other KISS news, the KISS ASYLUM Web site (kissasylum.com) is offering advance sales of a posthumous solo album by former KISS drummer Eric Carr. Carr played with the band from 1980 until his death from cancer in 1991. The CD was put together by Carr's family and former Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick and is comprised of ten songs recorded during the drummer's tenure with KISS. The track listing includes "Eyes Of Love," "Somebody's Waiting," "Heavy Metal Baby," "Just Can't Wait," "Mad Dog," "You Make Me Crazy," "Nightmare," and "Too Cool For School." An Eric Carr video is also scheduled to be released next month. -- Sorelle Saidman

Coop Vs. KISS Case Put to Rest
From: RollingStone.com
Legal battle between Alice Cooper and KISS settled out of court.
Eleven months after Alice Cooper's former publishers filed a suit for copyright infringement against Kiss frontman Paul Stanley and former guitarist Bruce Kulick, the parties have reached an out-of-court settlement. Six Palms Music Corp., which filed the complaint with the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on Oct. 28, 1998, contended that the KISS song "Dreamin,'" from their latest album, Psycho Circus, sounded far too much like the Cooper classic "Eighteen," released back in 1971. The company, which published the Cooper hit, alleges that Stanley had to have heard the chart-topping single on numerous occasions since the two groups were contemporaries in the Seventies shock rock scene. According to insiders, Six Palms was initially asking for a rather high settlement amount and planned to take the case to court, but once the lawyers for KISS's label presented them with the disappointing sales figures for Circus, they lowered the amount they were asking. Paul Stanley and Bruce Kulick were in attendance at the settlement talks, but Cooper was not. The parties reached their agreement on August 12. Ironically, Bruce Kulick's brother Bob toured with the Alice Cooper in 1975 during their Welcome to My Nightmare tour, and he even produced last year's Alice Cooper tribute album, Humanary Stew, playing on its rendition of "Eighteen." Evan Cohen, lawyer for Six Palms, confirmed that the case had been settled, but declined to give any further details. Cooper's management also confirmed that a settlement had been reached, but said they had no further details: "We heard that the suit had been settled, but since we weren't party to it, we didn't expect an official confirmation." Although no one is saying, it's rumored that the settlement was in the low six figures. Calls to McGhee Entertainment, KISS's management company, were not returned. -- Jaan Uhelszki 8/18/99

UNION Album News
From: Metal Edge
If a sneak earful of UNION's new songs is any indication, the band's second album is going to be great. The band is now finishing the mix of the as yet untitled record and so far the songs are excellent, with heavy grooves, memorable choruses, catchy melodies and great playing. Some standouts so far include "Shine," "I Wanna Be," the very pissed off "Who Do You Think You Are," and "Dear Friend," on which Bruce Kulick sings the verses and John Corabi sings the choruses--Bruce wrote it about Eric Carr. While original plans were to release the album this fall, time constraints prevented that and it will now be out in late January/early February via Spitfire Records.

Gene Simmons as a Brooklyn Hairdresser?
From: Metal Edge
Gene Simmons as a Brooklyn hairdresser? Yes, the God of Thunder will be trading lizard boots for a blow dryer in the movie Wish You Were Dead, set to shoot this September in Los Angeles. Lin Shaye, who plays the uptight Mrs. Bruce in Detroit Rock City, lets her hair down a bit as a busybody manicurist from Texas in this dark comedy, and will share some scenes with him. Shaye is admittedly disappointed about the lackluster performance of DRC at the box office and believes that its R rating "may have hurt it a little bit. I let my son see it, and he's only 10. He loved it. Kids know about drugs, and there certainly wasn't any explicit sex in it. We blaspheme, but so do so many films. Maybe it will pick up with word of mouth," she says, noting that she saw it again with friends the night it opened "and people loved it. They clapped and cheered and laughed. We're not doing brain surgery and we know that," she adds, predicting, "It will probably do extremely well on video."

The Essential Eric Singer Interview
From: KISS ASYLUM
Several weeks ago KISS ASYLUM hosted an ESP autographed CD contest in conjunction with an Eric Singer Q&A. Many great questions for Eric were submitted during the contest and, using those questions as a foundation, Eric recently took some time out of his very busy schedule to talk with KISS ASYLUM and complete an in depth interview for all the online fans. As you will see, Eric has really covered the bases in this one on such varied topics as: the meaning of his tattoos, thoughts on hip-hop and "sampling," his upcoming tour with Alice Cooper, his infamous watch collection, Gene as business man, drumming gear and technique tips, Russian women, his brutally honest "tell it like it is" walk through the nuts and bolts of how the music business really works, and, of course, ESP and his other musical endeavours. All that and more is covered, making this a must read for any fan of Eric Singer, ESP, KISS, or the music business in general.

Gene Simmons Of KISS Sparks To Movie Mogul Role
From: Yahoo.com via Jheni Clason
By Dean Goodman
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - In the early 1960s, a young Israeli immigrant in New York named Gene Klein was considering a career as a rabbi. But he changed his mind one day when he saw a slightly older girl of about 14 jumping rope. "She's got long black hair like Catherine Zeta-Jones," he recalled, "and her hair is slapping her a-- like she's been bad and she deserves to be punished, and I'm going, 'This is better than religion. I want some of that that.'" To make a long story short, Klein changed his name to Simmons and became a Knight In Satan's Service -- i.e., a co-founder of KISS, the bass player and ruthless money man who spits blood and breathes fire. These days, Simmons, who turns 50 on Aug. 25, will tell anyone who listens that Kiss has more gold albums than anyone but the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. Without any prompting, he will reel off the latest KISS merchandising deals, including a KISS credit card -- "every time you use it, I make pennies, every time." His latest business endeavor is filmmaking. The Gene Simmons Co. is in the final stages of setting up a production deal at an unspecified major studio, with financing of up to $500 million from an unspecified British bank, Simmons says. Already, he boasts of having a dozen projects in development around town. His first project in theaters is "Detroit Rock City," a $14 million film he describes as ``a religious movie'' -- hence the above anecdote. Unfortunately, it seems a higher power decided it was Simmons' turn to be punished because the film opened to just over $2 million in its first weekend.

Paul & Peter on Mancow
From: Mike Smith
On Monday, August 16th, I had the honor to speak with Peter Criss and Paul Stanely via telephone on "Mancow's Morning Madhouse". This is a syndicated radio show out of Chicago. The guys were in great moods and were clowning around quite a bit, which is nothing new for Peter. Paul spoke briefly about his role in "Phantom", and mentioned that he had been offered the role in the upcoming production of "Jeckyl and Hyde." When I asked about the so-called "Farewell Tour", the two were quick to say that they are planning on touring for a long time, as long as it's still fun for all four. The tour will resume in January and Paul confirmed that the band will be performing songs from the 80's as well as all the other KISS classics. So I guess all KISS fans can rest easy for a while knowing that the band will be around for at least a little while longer!

Gene Simmons Quote on DRC Disappointment
From: Netscape.com via David Stephenson
"I'm sitting on Mt. Olympus and these silly humans don't behave the way I want them to, and now the heavens will open and I will zap them with lightning bolts." KISS frontman Gene Simmons, on the disappointing $2 million opening of "Detroit Rock City," which he produced.

Detroit Rock Disappointment
From: Yahoo.com
Three movies launched in wide release this weekend, but only one did well: the Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy comedy ''Bowfinger'', which opened at No. 2 with $18.2 million. The others were the Asian-set prison drama ``Brokedown Palace'' at No. 9 with $4.0 million, and the KISS rock 'n' roll road movie ''Detroit Rock City'' whose $2.0 million tally placed it well out of the top 10. Set in 1978, New Line Cinema's ``Detroit Rock City'' stars four Ohio high school kids who overcome numerous obstacles in their road trip to Detroit to see their first KISS concert. The band appears at the very end in a concert scene playing the title song. KISS frontman Gene Simmons also served as a producer of the $14 million movie. ``Nobody is thrilled, of course, but that's life,'' said Simmons, when reached at his Beverly Hills home Sunday morning. ''You believe in something, whether it's music or art, you put on your battle gear and beat up the unconverted. It's never over.'' Asked why the same fans -- the so-called Kiss Army -- who scoop up their records appeared to avoid the movie, Simmons said, ``Good question. We tour, we get millions of people.'' Simmons' The Gene Simmons Co. has two projects in development at New Line, and he is meeting with his attorneys Monday to put the finishing touches on a production deal at an unidentified studio where he will have funding of more than $100 million.

Gene Simmons Sounds Off
From: Wallofsound.com via Steve Araki
Still looking for a vacation spot to close the summer? How about Detroit Rock City at your local multiplex? Immortalized yet again in the opening track of KISS's 1976 classic "Destroyer," Motown's rock and roll alter ego plays the musical mecca for four Cleveland teens, circa 1978, who are willing to do anything to see KISS play at Cobo Hall, where "Kiss Alive" was recorded -- even if it means battering their way through Bible-thumping moms, snotty disco lizards, strip clubs, convenience store thugs, ticket scalpers -- you get the picture. It's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" without the tans, the malls, and the backyard swimming pools, but still raucous and with just enough T&A to keep the target audience's hormones trotting. Nothing happens in the world of KISS without the band's input, of course, so it's not surprising that bassist Gene Simmons co-produced the Adam Rifkin-directed film, and contributed a number of items from his personal memorabilia stash to lend even greater authenticity to the film. KISS itself appears in the climax, in all of its "Love Gun" tour glory, but Simmons and Paul Stanley want the world to know that as far as they're concerned, "Detroit Rock City" is about -- and for -- the kids.

Stanley Gives Props To KISS Fans At "Detroit" Premiere
From: MTV via Mike Hogan
Earlier this week, the members of KISS donned their makeup once again to perform at the premiere of the film "Detroit Rock City." The film was co-produced by bassist Gene Simmons and got its title from the group's classic track of the same name. Set in the band's 1978 heyday, it stars Edward Furlong as one of four teens trying desperately to get into a KISS concert in Detroit. The members of KISS (Simmons, guitarist Paul Stanley, drummer Peter Criss, and guitarist Ace Frehley) all appear in the film as well, and at the premiere, MTV News asked the group if real-life KISS fans are just as fanatical about the band as their cinematic counterparts. "They love us. They'll do anything for us," Stanley told MTV News. "Because they understand that our relationship with our fans is a two-way street. We do everything we can for them, and likewise, they do everything for us. It's been this incredible love affair, so to speak, for 25 years." [RealVideo] "Detroit Rock City" RealVideo KISS also performed at the premiere party, which was held at the campus of UCLA. Everclear, who covers Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back In Town" for the "Detroit Rock City" soundtrack, opened up the show and was joined by Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen and Robin Zander for a version of that band's "Surrender" (a live version of which appears on the film's soundtrack). Cheap Trick, who name-drops KISS in "Surrender," used to open for the war-paint covered rockers in the '70s. "Detroit Rock City" just opened in theaters nationwide, and the soundtrack, which also features new songs by KISS, Pantera, the Donnas and Marilyn Manson, is in stores now.

Rock 'n' Roll All Night - Retail Every Day
From: JamMusic via Steve Araki
By Darryl Sterdan -- Winnipeg Sun
Monsters of rock KISS put the business in show business with teen comedy Detroit Rock City.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- If there's one thing Gene Simmons knows, it's how to KISS and sell. "Do you know me?" the fire-breathing, lizard-tongued bassist asks as he sits down with reporters to hype the new KISS-themed teen-comedy Detroit Rock City. He isn't wondering if we recognize him without his trademark batwing Kabuki makeup and leather codpiece; rather, he's swiping American Express's slogan to show off one of the band's latest commercial tie-ins -- The KISS Visa card. "Never leave home without it," Simmons unabashedly shills, holding up the card to show off the artwork of the four bandmembers -- Simmons, singer Paul Stanley, drummer Peter Criss and guitarist Ace Frehley. "This came out about six months ago," he explains in his familiar baritone growl. "The most exciting thing about it is that every single time people use it, I get pennies from heaven." In the past couple of years, those pennies have added up to a cloudburst of cash for KISS. Once the top-grossing act of the '70s thanks to their over-the-top live show, the band fell on hard times in the '80s, losing Criss and Frehley, doffing their makeup and putting out inferior albums. That reversed when the four kissed and made up in 1996. Their subsequent tour was 1997's top money-spinner. Their latest album, Psycho Circus, was accompanied by all the hype of their heyday. And of course, there's the merchandise -- everything from T-shirts to toilet paper, all overseen by Simmons. The band even owns a stake in a WCW wrestler called The Demon, a makeup-sporting brawler who debuts this month, to be followed by other KISS-themed characters.

KISS Hearing Goodbye with 'Rock City'
From: USA Today via Elvira Palomino
By Susan Wloszczyna
Confession: I saw Kiss in concert about 20 years ago when the band opened for the New York Dolls. They struck me, a nonfan, as a bunch of overage trick-or-treaters. Black Sabbath crossed with Bob Mackie. Were they good? Who knew? Individual songs melded into a continuous thunderous roar. What mattered was the blood-spewing, fire-breathing, macho-posturing spectacle of it all. That night I probably lost hearing I never knew I had, especially since their songs don't sound half-bad nowadays. I thought they were flashes in the proverbial pan. But with a tenacity rivaling that of cockroaches and telemarketers, Kiss has survived, and Detroit Rock City is a testament to that fact. A not-very-good testament, but one that rightly smacks of Kiss Kulture - rampant sexism, a deafening '70s soundtrack (try not to sing along to Cheap Trick's Surrender) and a worshipful view of the platform-tottering wonders. Meanwhile, religious zealots who denounce Kiss ("Knights in Satan's Service," supposedly) take it on the righteous chin.

Gene Simmons AOL Chat News
From: Metal Edge
There were some interesting revelations amidst the typical quips at the America Online chat with Gene Simmons on Thursday evening (August 12) [Click Here To Read The Full Chat Transcript]. In the half hour Q&A session fans learned that his favorite song to perform is "Deuce," that he has set his hair afire six or seven times over the course of 28 years, and that his hyperextended tongue is the result of a medical mistake: "The doctor pulled me out by the wrong appendage." But what questioners really wanted was real KISS info, and they got quite a bit. Besides pluging Detroit Rock City, which opens today, and the August 23 TV debut of the Demon at WCW's Monday Night Nitro live from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where KISS will perform "God of Thunder," KISS will "absolutely" tour in 2000, and details are being worked out for a Halloween show. "And, like all things KISS, we will make a complete spectacle of ourselves," Simmons said. He declined to talk about any New Year's Eve plans, and while he confirmed plans for another home video along the lines of Second Coming, he didn't give details. "If I start to tell you all the new stuff, it will make your head spin like the little girl in The Exorcist," he said. Addressing concerns about Ace Frehley's status in the band, he replied, "Ace is the single most unique human being I've ever met. He's like a brother to me. And at the same time, I've been angry at him like almost no one I've ever known. Ace and I flew into New York yesterday to do radio promotions. And, in case all of you are buzzing/gossiping, the God's honest truth is Ace is well, happy, and honestly can't wait to get out there and back up on stage with KISS." Further expounding on the topic of band harmony, he mused, "Anybody, team, family or any other kind of group that says they always get along are liars of the highest degree. In fact, all groups of peoples disagree on any number of issues in any number of times. KISS is probably no different than your family. You argue like cats and dogs, but blood is thicker than water. KISS is family. I can be angry at my brother, but if you say anything about him, I'll kill you." As for outside activities, Simmons discussed the CBS TV movie based on his story (it's Sleepless in Seattle -ish romance about a couple who meet at a KISS concert) that will air this winter, a New Line Cinema feature also based on his story called Groupies , and two flicks that will mark his return to acting: Wish You Were Dead (a twisted love-and-murder story) that films in September and Night Club, with Alec Baldwin, which lenses in October. Simmons's schoolteacher background came out when he lectured the assembly on his avowedly single status. "I don't know how many times I have to spell it out for everybody, so here we go again. Now, listen carefully all of you. I am not now married. I have never been married. I don't ever want to be married," he said, though he and longtime companion Shannon Tweed have two children. Simmons also praised Marilyn Manson as "clever," noting that he "has a point of view which doesn't depend on anybody else and I find that refreshing... I like bands that piss on the ground and claim their turf." As for KISS' return to makeup, he happoly noted that "KISS is the only band that has this multiple personality thing. We are both Clark Kent and Superman rolled into one. KISS had a huge career wearing make-up, and we had a huge career without make-up. Having said all of the above, Superman is still cooler than Clark Kent." And, reminding fans about DRC's opening, "Please go," he said. "My mother wants another house."

"Tale of the Fox" Limited Edition Trading Card Offer
From: KISS ASYLUM
Thoughtscape Sounds, The Caravello Family and Studio Chikara have just signed an agreement that will certainly set the pulses of Eric Carr fans racing. "We've just negotiated a deal that will allow us to put a foil embossed, extremely limited edition trading card in our initial video offering of Tale of the Fox" said Nick Fa-Kouri, CEO of BIG DOG PRESENTS (one of the partners involved in the production of the video). "There will be a total of five cards in all, each bearing an exclusive image of Eric, with one in each video. For the completist, the other four cards will be available through a mail in offer allowing fans to get the entire five card, limited edition set by buying only one video. We want the fans to know that we care about them, and forcing them to buy five videos would be ridiculous." So, here is the deal: To guarantee that you will get the special edition video, your order must be postmarked by September 1st. After that, there is no guarantee that we can get you the limited edition version. For all of you who have already ordered, thank you, and rest assured you're getting the goods! We are all very psyched about this latest development and know the fans are ready for the show! Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell the world. Tale of the Fox arrives at your house in September! In the meantime, make sure to visit The Official TALE OF THE FOX webpage at www.kissasylum.com/taleofthefox/ for all the details on this exciting Eric Carr Video Biography, including ordering information.

KISS, Everclear, And Cheap Trick Rock 'N' Roll All Night
From: Launch.com via Steve Araki
August 9th, a giant outdoor party was held in Los Angeles to celebrate the world premiere of Detroit Rock City, a new movie about four long-haired '70s teens on a hell-bent crusade to see hard rock titans Kiss in concert. Helping the guests get in the mood to party like it was 1979 was live entertainment by Everclear, Robin Zander and Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, and, as a truly grand finale, Kiss themselves. A UCLA parking lot in Westwood Village was transformed into what looked like a rock 'n' roll state fair, complete with football-field bleachers and a greasy junk-food menu that included chili dogs, hand-dipped ice cream, nachos, pizza, sub sandwiches, and hamburgers. Quite a few party guests sported Kiss facepaint, while one foursome, clad in full Kiss regalia from the tops of their long black wigs to the soles of their clawfooted platform boots, so uncannily resembled the gods of thunder that they caused many attendees to do a double-take. The celebrity-studded crowd included Brad Pitt, Monkee Micky Dolenz, News Radio's Andy Dick, David Was of Was (Not Was), and former MTV's Singled Out host Chris Hardwick, as well as several hundred lucky radio contest winners. First to hit the stage were Everclear, who came out wearing cowboy hats, short pants, and black socks held up by garters, and whose three-piece lineup was augmented by an accordion player, second guitarist, keyboardist, and extra percussionist. After riling up the audience with their modern rock radio hit "Santa Monica," they launched into a crowd-pleasing cover of Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back In Town," which appears on the Detroit Rock City soundtrack. Minutes after Everclear, Zander, and Nielsen left the stage, out came the evening's guests of honor--Kiss's own Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss--who pulled out all the stadium-rock stops despite the relatively small size of the parking lot venue. Their arrival on a stage that featured a "Detroit Rock City" neon sign and hydraulic platforms for Simmons and Frehley to pose upon was accompanied by a massive explosion of fireworks and flashpots that burned so brightly their heat could be felt by the fans in the highest bleachers, and pyro continued to play a big part throughout Kiss's renditions of "Detroit Rock City," "Shout It Out Loud," and "Cold Gin."

KISS Receives Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame
From: Metal Edge
Several hundred KISS fans turned out to witness the band's induction into the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Wednesday, August 11. As KISS music blared from loudspeakers, representatives of the media, VIPs including Detroit Rock City director Adam Rifkin, producers Kathleen Haase and Barry Levine, associate producer Tim Sullivan and Marilyn Manson guitarist John Lowrey, and KISS' family members stood by as the KISS star was unveiled at the intersection of LaBrea and Hollywood. The band received commemorative plaques from Hollywood's honorary mayor Johnny Grant, who proclaimed it KISS Day. Peter Criss hit an emotional note when he said, "I wish my mom and dad were still here to see this because I did it for them." "We wouldn't be here without you," Paul Stanley told the crowd. "This star is for you people. It has our name on it, but every one of you is responsible for it." Probably the happiest of the responsible horde was the artist who passed a large painting of the band up to the front--and got it returned with all four members' signatures. With Detroit Rock City opening on Friday, the promotional activities continue. Gene Simmons will participate in an America Online cyberchat today at 8 PM ET at keyword eachat, and next week several actors from the film will chat online with fans. Melanie Lynskey ("Beth") will field questions on Tuesday, August 17 at www.yahoo.com at 8 PM ET, and Sam Huntington ("Jam") will follow at the same Web adress at 9 PM ET. On Wednesday, August 18, Giuseppe Andrews ("Lex") will be America Online's guest at 8PM ET, keyword eachat. Meanwhile, the movie's soundtrack debuted on the Billboard chart at #68.

DRC on Access Hollywood
From: glittrkidz@earthlink.net
Access Hollywood had a minute and a half segment on their show tonight from the premiere of "Detroit Rock City" last night. There was alot of cool shots from KISS' performance, an interview with the band, a description of the film and NewsRadio's Andy Dick singing "Beth." A pretty cool segment. There's also about five different tv ads for the movie airing, including more that is a great mock of "The Blair Witch Project" which, instead of saying, "In 1994, three student filmakers...." says "In 1978, four teenagers disappeared outside of Detroit, Michigan on their way to a concert. 20 years later, their footage was found." It ends with "Detroit Rock City" written in the "Blair Witch" font and the little witch stick figure holding a Flying V guitar. Also, the Official KISS Detroit Rock City Movie Magazine is on the stands. It's a cool magazine with alot of info on the film including stills, production layouts and sketches.

Metal Edge "DRC" Movie Premiere Party Review
From: Metal Edge
KISS and New Line Cinema went all-out to entertain the VIPs invited to the premiere of Detroit Rock City on Monday night (August 9), which began with a screening of the movie at the Mann Village in Westwood, West Los Angeles. The film started about an hour late, while the large theater filled with DRC castand staff members, their guests, New Line people, and other industryites, but the wait was worth it, as it's one of the funniest movies of the summer. Afterward, invitees walked a few blocks to one of the parking lots at UCLA, which was closed off for the private party. Booths at one end offered food (sandwiches, pizza, nachos, chili dogs and other portable, edibles) and an open bar provided free-flowing drinks, and guests enjoyed both while waiting for the show to begin. Everclear performed their "Boys are Back in Town" cover from the DRC soundtrack and were joined by Robin Zander and Rick Neilsen of Cheap Trick to perform "Surrender," also on the soundtrack. But this was KISS' night, and the band made the most of their brief four song set consisting of "Detroit Rock City," "Shout it Out Loud," "Cold Gin," and "Rock and Roll All Nite," packing all the bells and whistles--fireworks and flames, Ace Frehley's smoking guitar, Gene Simmons' fire-spitting trick, levitating risers, confetti and streamer showers, and the set-ending Paul Stanley guitar smash--into 20 minutes on stage. It was fun to see everyone from kids in KISS shirts to suit-and-tie execs getting into it and singing along. KISS didn't stick around to schmooze with the cast and other party-goers, but will be dressed to kill again on Wednesday morning, when they'll receive their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Heavy Metal & Hard Rock News: Reliable label sources say that KISS will indeed tour once more before calling it quits. As for other rumours, KISS will release a new album with Ace and Peter next year with producer Bob Ezrin. Alive IV and a boxed set are also on the way. It has been reported that Gene Simmons will be the first KISS member to record a new solo album with either Bob Rock or Glenn Ballard. It is said to be a double album with 30 songs, although it will be some time before he goes into the studio, with all the KISS stuff going on at the present time.

He's Made Up to Produce
From: LA Times via Jerry Cornish
Gene Simmons has the heart of a showman, and that's serving the legendary KISS leader well as he segues into a new career in film.By Steve Hochman
From some of the stories you hear, you'd think movie producers breathe fire and spit blood to get their films made. Gene Simmons figures he can do that--as leader of the extravagant rock band KISS, he's been doing exactly that as part of his stage act for nearly 30 years. And now he's taken the approach to Hollywood with a vengeance, with his first credit as a movie producer coming on "Detroit Rock City," opening Friday, a frisky tale of four boys in Cleveland in 1978 on a quest to make it to--you guessed it--a KISS concert in Detroit. "The original producers, the first generation, were showmen," Simmons says, leaning back in a chair with his leg up on a table in a room at the Four Seasons hotel. "It was closer to Barnum & Bailey--'Ladies and gentlemen and children of all ages, welcome to the greatest show on Earth.' "Along the way it seems that movie producers in general got more conservative because they apparently had to go court Wall Street and financiers and so on," he opines. "Where the role of the producer, as far as I'm concerned, is first and foremost a showman. You have to sell ice cubes to Eskimos." The point is underscored by the fact that the leg Simmons has over the table is covered with gnarly gray armor, as is the rest of his 6-foot-2 frame (augmented another 8 or so inches by imposing monster boots), while his face is painted in the Kabuki nightmare style of his trademark KISS persona, the Demon. If that's not enough, he'll happily, at the slightest provocation, put his legendarily long, pointed tongue (reddened for effect by a steady supply of cherry Lifesavers) into waggling action. Not that Simmons wears these clothes to work in the movie world--as much as we might like to picture him this way in story meetings and financing sessions. This day he's done up to do some on-camera bits for an MTV special on "Detroit Rock City," in which Simmons and his three bandmates perform in the inevitable conclusion. Also on hand at the hotel are Edward Furlong, one of the movie's stars, and Marilyn Manson, who recorded a version of AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" for the soundtrack album. And he wants there to be no mistake about his role as producer. It is no mere dilettante exercise nor a title he got simply because it involves his band. He was a fully active member of the production team--and the effort is the boot in the door of what is quickly blossoming into a legitimate movie production career. Simmons already has two other films in development at New Line, which also made "Detroit Rock City," and nine other feature projects placed at various studios around Hollywood. And he's also in the process of setting up his own movie production company, with, he says, $100 million in revolving bank credit to give him the power to green-light projects on his own.

From New KISS Concept Album to Cartoons to WCW's
"Demon" Wrestler: Gene Simmons Sounds Off

From: San Diego Union-Tribune
KISS AND SELL: With marketing as his mother tongue, Gene Simmons is coming at you with a movie and merchandise (oh, yes, and some music).
Even when his famously long tongue is in a rare moment of repose, Gene Simmons projects the supremely self-satisfied air of someone who is certain that he has life licked. To drive home that point, the graying rock icon is quick to produce some of the spoils of his 26 years as the bassist and chief marketing maven behind Kiss, the proudly flamboyant, cartoon-come-to-life band he has helped transform into a multimillion-dollar-a-year franchise. The fact that no one has specifically asked the 49-year-old Simmons to display any of those spoils is at best a technicality. And Simmons, who is seated in a plush hotel suite and dressed in jeans, a dark T-shirt and a pin-striped blue banker's jacket, has never been one to rest on semantics. Quicker than you can say "Detroit Rock City" -- the title of the Kiss-inspired, teen-boys-coming-of-age movie that Simmons is purportedly promoting -- he takes out his wallet. It is the start of his unique way of answering a question about the secret of Kiss' success and longevity. And it has nothing and everything to do with his co-producing involvement in "Detroit Rock City," which he also appears in during the Kiss concert sequence that concludes the movie, which opens nationwide Friday.
[KA Note: The above is the opening of a very lengthy article in the August 8, 1999, San Diego Union-Tribune featuring an interview with Gene in which he discuss numerous KISS related topics... mostly merchandising. Some highlights from the article are below, but be sure to click over to the San Diego Union-Tribune for the entire article!]

  • The fact that the dramatically challenged script for "Detroit Rock City" reads like a Cheech & Chong reject is also of little concern to Simmons, who views the movie as a well-timed marketing opportunity to keep his band's name in the limelight during its current hiatus. The fact that he is far more colorful and interesting than the film he is dutifully plugging is as unimportant as the fact that only one of the young actors in the movie admits to being a devoted Kiss fan. "Let's just say that, for me, it's opportunity knocks," Simmons says. "And it has more to do with an agenda, which oftentimes takes precedent for me. I know this gets me into trouble, because everybody always talks about content first. But when you get up to bat, and the ball's coming your way, and you only have one swing, you're going to swing at it, whether it's exactly what you want or not."
  • As if on cue, Simmons quickly begins to plug a slew of upcoming Kiss-related business projects, only one of which -- the band's next release, an as yet unrecorded and undefined "concept album" -- has much to do with music. There's a "Kiss Psycho Circus" cartoon series, for which he is now in final negotiations with Fox TV's children's division; "Rock and Roll All Nite," a CBS-TV movie of the week, scheduled to air this fall; a possible Las Vegas Kiss production that, like the band, could run indefinitely; and a proposed event that, mysteriously but fittingly, would team Kiss with an even longer-lived show-biz institution: Barnum & Bailey's circus.
  • "We don't care about being original," says Simmons. "You be original, you be cutting-edge. You blaze the trail. And then it becomes a mass-culture ritual, and I will follow. I don't want to be the first, I just want to do it right.

    DRC Much Music Special Report
    From: Sean Cowie
I just finished watching the DRC special on Much Music and it was a cool, behind-the-scenes look at the movie, the actors and the production. We also saw some live footage of the band performing in Toronto for inclusion in the film, as well as some scenes of the Millennium shoot from last fall here in Vancouver. There were lots of fan testimonials and the usual spin from the band. Also featured were some interviews with the actors, DRC director Adam Rifkin, producer Barry Levine, KISS manager Doc McGhee, Shannon Tweed and the band. Shannon Tweed (looking stunning as always) describes the KISS phenomenon as something she never understood. Lots of fans used as extras show off their outfits, makeup and tattoos. Ace talks about the "KISS magic." Paul likens the film to a cross between The Wizard of Oz and Fast Times At Ridgemont High. Gene revealed that initially 2 productions were in the works: one involving the band who wanted to do a motion picture, and another by a separate group of people who wanted to do a TV movie-of-the-week. When both were conflicting, they decided to join forces and make the film. Both Gene and Rifkin are quoted as saying that everyone involved in making the movie are KISS fans and it is a movie about the fans for the fans by the fans. Producer Barry Levine wouldn't divulge much other than the basic plot that we already know but he did say the final scene will be the band performing Detroit Rock City live. Levine, the photographer behind The KISS Years book and collaborator with the band since 1976, reveals his relationship with the band over the years. He also mentions that he and the band had been trying for 10 years to get a KISS film off the ground. He said that the band's original idea was something of a sci-fi adventure film but he found the script for the DRC movie and presented it to Gene back in '96 during the Reunion Tour. After the tour was finished, some re-writes were done and the film was born. Overall, this was an interesting half-hour that gave some insight into the making of Detroit Rock City.

    MTV's DRC Special Report
    From: Derek
I saw the 1/2 hour special yesterday. The 4 guys in the movie host it ("driving" a car as they talk). They actually come across pretty likable and funny - very Beavis and Butthead-ish. They show a few clips from the movie. But (there's always a "but" it seems these days) they do a countdown of the Top 5 performances ever on MTV so you have to sit through some video clips (even though they are great - Bush doing "Comedown", M Manson doing "Beautiful People," etc.). KISS is #1 with their performance at the Brooklyn Bridge. The last few minutes include the 4 guys talking to Gene (dressed in full Destroyer-era costume). It's just a little banter back and forth, nothing major.

    KISS Saves Santa Claus
From: New York Daily News via Charlie Reussner
In the Sunday New York Daily News there was a story about the up comming KISS movie "Detroit Rock City." The article also mentions some other soon to come KISS projects one being an episode of the FOX animated series "The Family Guy" called "KISS saves Santa Claus" ("Who else could?" Simmons asks). Also mentioned was WCW and KISS My Ass toilet paper. "Give 'em as gifts!," Simmons advises. "I believe even toilet paper should be fun."

    Loving KISS
    From: Toronto Sun
By Natasha Stoynoff - Toronto Sun
HOLLYWOOD -- Warning: This interview may contain nudity. When Gene Simmons walks into a room, his tongue precedes him. The lizard-long member that he's whipped out in KISS concerts for over two decades has its own mythical stature to measure up to. That's why today a group of female reporters, armed with mathematical instruments, aim to get to the truth of this tongue-twisting matter. "We want to see how long it is," says one, holding up a 12-inch ruler. "Come on, whip it out." The KISS singer-bassist stands up, stretches his imposing 6-foot-2 frame, and begins to drop his pants. Oops. Wrong body part. So sorry. He then obliges by sticking out that famous tongue and performing acrobatics with it, to the giggles of the women in the room. This is the kind of sexual, rebel-rousing behaviour that has helped sell over 80 million KISS records since Simmons founded the group in 1973. "KISS has always been about the fans," says Simmons, now 50, whose band was still one of the top grossing during the 1996-97 concert season. These days, the performer-turned-savvy businessman is also behind the scenes for the fans as co-producer of the film, Detroit Rock City. It opens this Friday, a Friday the 13th.

    KISS on Parents/Teacher Day
From: AP Newswire via Tuck Watts
(New York) -- Imagine the parent/teacher conferences when the teacher is meeting with Gene Simmons of KISS. Simmons tells People magazine he goes to the conference like any other dad. He says his kid has an advantage when it comes to show-and-tell. He says everyone in the class had to bring a picture of one of their parents doing something interesting at work. His kid brought in a picture of Simmons spitting blood into a crowd. As Simmons puts it, "What other kid could top it?" KISS will get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next Wednesday. Their movie, "Detroit Rock City," opens two days later. --- Margie Szaroleta

    "Detroit Rock" Suit
    From: LA Times
Alleging that the movie contains depictions of sex and drug use that "damage the magazine's family oriented image," the science fiction publication Famous Monsters of Filmlmand filed suit Thursday against New Line Cinema's forthcoming film "Detroit Rock City," claiming that the magazine is featured prominently in the film without authorization from the publisher. The magazine, which also named KISS member and movie co-producer Gene Simmons in the suit, is also seeking an injunction to stop the film's release. Studio spokespeople could not immediately be reached for comment. The film opens August 13.

Ace Frehley Records Song for Anton Fig Solo Album
    From: Steve Ponchaud
I interviewed Sebastian Bach yesterday and he informed me that he just got done recording a new song with Ace Frehley for the new Anton Fig solo album. The track is called "Know Where You Go." He wasn't sure when the album will be coming out. Find out more about my interview and my Sebastian Bach & Friends special at Sebastian's web site www.sebastianweb.com, or our station K-ROCK's website www.rocktalk.com. I interviewed him early last year also, and he told me then that he had another song that he co-wrote with Ace that he was hoping would land on "Psycho Circus", but it never did.

"Detroit Rock City": A 'Love Gun' for the Rest of Us
    From: FoxNews.com via Suze
    By Christina Nunez
NEW YORK -- Were you a teen-ager in the '70s? Did you worship the KISS gods? Are you a big Edward Furlong fan? If you answered yes to any of the above, Detroit Rock City is certainly your movie. But if the other 75 percent of summer's audience manages to drag itself away from the other teen-oriented offerings at the multiplex, they might find some lo-fi, no-brain entertainment in Adam Rifkin's by-the-book adolescent comedy. Director Rifkin, who is best known for his ABC kids' series Bone Chillers, calls Detroit Rock City "a kind of American Graffiti meets Rock 'n' Roll High School." The movie follows four kids who are hell-bent on seeing the "greatest rock show in the world": the 1978 "Love Gun" KISS show at Cobo Hall in Detroit. The journey charts more ups and downs than a 15-year-old's hormone levels. "For adults who grew up in the '70s, it was the kind of story you could look back on with nostalgia," Rifkin says. "For young audiences it was really relevant, because teen-agers haven't changed much from the '70s to the '90s." Not sure what decade Rifkin is living in, but one of the most refreshing things about Detroit Rock City is exactly how quaint the teen rebellion seems in light of movies such as "Go" and "Kids."

VH1 To Cybercast "DRC" Post-Screening Party
KLOS Radio To Give Away Tickets To The Party

    From: Metal Edge
Next week will be a big one for KISS! August 9th is the premiere event for Detroit Rock City, the band receives a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame two days later on August 11th, and on Friday the 13th (guess KISS and New Line Cinemas are not superstitious!) the movie opens nationwide. KISS will perform at the invitation-only post-screening party, as will soundtrack participants ("The Boys Are Back in Town") Everclear, who'll be joined by Robin Zander and Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick to play "Surrender," which also appears on the soundtrack. Radio station KLOS will give away a limited number of tickets to the Westwood event, but everyone else can see the performances via a VH1 Cybercast at www.vh1.com. Fans are, however, invited to turn out for the Walk of Fame induction to witness the unveiling of KISS' star at 11:30 AM on August 11. Dick Clark will emcee the event, which will take place on Hollywood Blvd. between La Brea and Sycamore. Meanwhile, the next KISS feature (a biographical feature) is in pre-production, and a CBS telefilm is being written that follows a guy and girl who see each other at a KISS concert in 1976 and miss getting together, but try to find each other at a KISS concert two decades later. As for actual KISS concerts, it now seems that the Next KISS Tour, which may or may not be a farewell one (nothing has been officially announced), will begin in January of 2000.

KISS' Gene Simmons Talks Movies, Tour, Cartoons
    From: CDnow.com
Detroit Rock City isn't the last dramatic KISS project we'll be seeing anytime soon. Gene Simmons says work has already begun on a follow-up to New Line Cinema's coming-of-age comedy, which opens Aug. 13. It'll be a more biographical KISS feature penned by Wesley Strick (Lethal Weapon). Simmons says he's also working on a Psycho Circus cartoon show for the Fox Kids Channel, planning a tour to begin in January, and working on a CBS movie-of-the-week called Rock and Roll All Nite. This last project is being penned by Jeff Arch, known for Sleepless in Seattle, and contains a similar theme. "A guy and a girl go with two different groups to a KISS concert in 1976," Simmons explains. "There's a moment when they see each other across the room, but they can't hear each other. And they get separated at the end of the concert. They go back to their normal lives and settle for lives that are just OK. But when KISS announces a farewell tour years later, they have to go back, because maybe there's that special person there." For now, fans will have to live with Detroit Rock City, a considerably less romantic film that follows four high school boys from Cleveland (Edward Furlong, Giuseppe Andrews, Sam Huntington, and James De Bello) on a mission to see KISS play Detroit in 1978. The reunited original members of KISS appear in the finale, as themselves. Their blood-gurgling performance of the movie's title song was filmed last December, after a local rock station filled Hamilton, Ontario's Copps Coliseum with 4,000 shrieking teen-agers in period costume. "I felt, clearly, a lapse of time and space," says Simmons, who co-produced the film, "to look out and see all the afros and bell-bottoms. It was a time piece." This is not the first time Kiss has gotten a platform boot in Hollywood's door. In 1978, the band made a TV movie called KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park, which was either brilliantly bad or just bad, depending on who you ask. Simmons, who turns 50 later this month, says that pushing Kiss into the mainstream media stems from a desire to have his band "mean all things to all people." "In fact, I'm very jealous of religion," he says. "If it were up to me, KISS would be a religion. KISStianity -- it's got a ring to it, don't you think?" -- Corey Levitan

    Gene Addresses Ace's Radio Comments
    From: AFTONBLADET via John Brewer
In an interview with Magnus Sundholm for Swedish publication AFTONBLADET Gene addresses some of the comments made by Ace recently on the radio about leaving KISS after the next tour winds up in 2000. Here is some of the interview in English:
Magnus: Do you think there anything in the rumors that the original lineup will break up on New Year's Eve, as Ace said?
Gene: I'm not worried. If he wants to leave we will just replace him. But I don't belive him. Ace has always been Ace, always uncontrolable. Thats what makes him great.
Magnus: Why don't you belive him?
Gene: The last time he did it, it went straight to hell. In the beginning of the 80's he left the band to start his solo career. We said he could both be a solo artist and in KISS, but he did not want to. So he left the band, and had a solo career and private life that left him bankrupt.
Magnus: He may have forgot that?
Gene: Not a chance. Its just his old demons who come to the surface sometimes, but they will soon go away.

Some new items are arriving at KISS Shop this week, including: Detroit Rock City Metal Edge Magazine $5.99 (DRME); Detroit Rock City Starlog Magazine $9.99 (DRST); and the Detroit Rock City Soundtrack CD $17.99 (DRCD). Also new at KISS Shop, a Special Sale Items Section has been added to the front page listing items that have been or will be discontinued very soon. We have a very limited number of these items on hand and we would encourage fans to order early to avoid disappointment. And remember, at KISS Shop shipping is always FREE to customers living within the United States, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico - something to keep in mind when comparing prices!

KISS ASYLUM Opens General Discussion BB
    From: KISS Asylum
Since the opening of the KISS ASYLUM Bulletin Boards thousands of fans each and every day have made it a habit of hanging out at KISS ASYLUM, talking about KISS and everything else. Many online fans have made friendships (even marriages!) and discovered that sometimes there is more they want to talk about with their new (and old) friends than just KISS. Because of the increase in this "general discussion" in the KISS ASYLUM community we have decided to open an "Asylum General Discussion" forum specifically for online fans to talk with their new friends about "non" KISS topics of discussion (from current events like JFK Jr., to sports, to the infamous "Blair Witch Project!"). The intent is to free up the KISS ASYLUM "KISS Army Online" bulletin boards for directly "KISS" discussion. Now there are 6 great forum boards to choose from: KISS, UNION, Bruce Kulick, Eric Singer, Metal discussion, and General Discussion. We encourage everyone online to visit KISS ASYLUM Interactive and the Bulletin Board Message Center, there's bound to be a board there for you!
